Marvel’s successful digital Infinite Comics will soon welcome an all-ages title to the fold. MARVEL UNIVERSE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, set in and inspired by the world of the hit animated series “Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man,” will be unveiled later this year. Boasting talent from the world of comics and television including writers Eugene Son, Matt Kindt, Cullen Bunn and Tim Seeley as well as artists JL Mast, Geoffrey Beulieu, Luciano Vecchio, and Soutchey Leimetry, the comic promises to bring the best aspects of both formats together for fans.

According to Marvel VP of Digital Products Kristin Vincent, bringing Ultimate Spider-Man to the Infinite Comics format made sense, especially in the context of an all-ages story.

“We are trying to foster and grow the next generation of comic lovers,” she states. “We’ve heard from parents saying, ‘I think my kids would get a kick out of comics and I just can’t find a way to make it relevant in their lives the way it was in mine.’”

Marvel being aware of the challenge and committed to bring kids quality stories initially offered a more traditional digital format comic to the all-ages audience but found that while the stories connected, the presentation did not always follow suit.

“Kids are fully digital natives at this point and used to using the whole screen, being able to interact with it,” explains Vincent. “The old paradigm of print to digital was not really resonating with them and was confusing.”

The Infinite Comics format seemed a natural solution to the situation.

“[The Infinite format] uses the full screen, it has a sense interaction,” she describes. “We think that the format will resonate more with this next generation.”

The question remained what character would be best suited to bring this story to young readers. Spider-Man seemed an overwhelmingly correct choice.

“Everyone loves Spider-Man!” Vincent asserts. “It is an entry point for a lot of kids.”

Moreover, “Ultimate Spider-Man” in particular, has connected in a big way with audiences.

“It is a show with global reach and resonance,” Vincent affirms.

“[Spider-Man] is great for international audiences,” she continues. “Kids can really relate to the Peter Parker side of things but also, because of the full mask, kids often envision that they can be Spider-Man; that they can put on the mask.”

The scope of Spider-Man’s audience led Marvel to consider how best to reach all kids, not just Americans.

“We thought, ‘How do we get this to as many kids as possible so they can really experience Marvel for the first time and get introduced to comics?’” Vincent recalls. “We decided, ‘Let’s translate it.”

As a result, MARVEL UNIVERSE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN will be available in 10 additional languages set to roll out immediately after the series’ English language debut, allowing kids from around the world to imagine themselves under that mask and saying Spidey’s wisecracks in their native tongue.
