A New God of Thunder Debuts In Thor this October

Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman discuss the mystery woman wielding Mjolnir and the changes she brings to the Marvel Universe!

Frost Giants beware–there's a new God of Thunder protecting Midgard, and she's not messing around! For the first time in THOR's five decades of publication, the mantle of the mightiest Avenger will be turned over to a new mystery woman.

The all-new THOR #1 by continuing writer Jason Aaron and new artist Russell Dauterman of CYCLOPS fame will debut this fall in the aftermath of the status quo obliterating ORIGINAL SIN. As shocking as this change may seem, promises that this has been in the Asgardian cards ever since he launched THOR: GOD OF THUNDER in 2012.

"I've known since I first took over the series that I wanted to eventually have someone else pick up the hammer," says the writer. "It's kind of a time-honored Thor tradition at this point, isn't it? Going back to the days of Beta Ray Bill."

Aaron pointed out that Mjolnir's other masters have rarely been women, a fact that he sought to change with this title's evolution:

"This really is a Thor story unlike any we've ever seen before, and it's not meant to be fleeting. It's not a one-time thing or an alternate reality. This is the new version of Thor in the Marvel Universe."

Joining Aaron on this journey will be artist Dauterman, who just made his big Marvel debut drawing epic space battles and heartwarming/breaking emotional moments in CYCLOPS. The chance to launch a new Thor title alongside Jason Aaron still seems too good to be true to the rising artist.

"THOR: GOD OF THUNDER has been one of my favorite books from the past couple years," says Dauterman. "I'm absolutely thrilled to be on board continuing those stories with Jason, especially with this new premise."

Dauterman doesn’t seem daunted by the series' bold new concept, either: "I was excited at the prospect of drawing a Thor book in general—I'm a fan of the character and love mythology and fantasy stories. But, when [THOR editor] Wil Moss said that the new Thor would be a Goddess of Thunder, I was super excited! I've always gravitated toward strong female characters."

There's one aspect of this new God of Thunder that remains a tightly kept secret—her identity.

"The previous Thor doesn't know who she is," explains Aaron. "Not even All-Father Odin seems to know."

While the creative team may have remained mum about the alter ego of Mjolnir's new owner, Aaron did reveal that the tone of this new series will be very much in line with what fans have come to love about his THOR: GOD OF THUNDER run.

"I'm still looking to do big, epic stories,” he vows. “Overall, I'm still going for a dark [Jack] Kirby vibe. [This series stars] a badass Viking goddess with a hammer facing Frost Giants and dark elves and all sorts of wild new villains."

I been thinking this for some time myself. After the identity crises I was hoping they would reboot the whole scheme since wow you really cannot bounce back from something that bad.  However they did not..  I had stopped reading Spiderman after they had said in a comic when they still had people ask questons in the back of the book ( one of my all time favorite parts of the comic fan input) they said they would not kill off Ben AKA scarlet spider...

              Then they did...

This to me was a huge slap in the face to readers but I still had my favorites and one of those was Thor and Silver surfer and Captain America and a few others... I did like the x-ment but wow that went and got so crazy that trying to read it required a damn gps and a translater...

You simply had to scratch your head and wonder..

So the question of what is wrong with Marvel is really simple of a answer they forgot what a good story is , they forgot what a hero is and they forgot that sometimes you cannot fit to much into a boreetto and still have it come out good. Like the last Thor story line where so much takes place but the rest of the universe has not had a single day truly pass. I mean some story lines make sense but come on this one did not.

Reset the whole universe every five years and have a huge ending when they do. This lets old characters not be stagnant and it gives writers more leverage to create. Nobody likes to do something and not have any freedom to express a great idea...

However Thor as a women is a bit over the line... not so much as the way it was done... This Thor is Thor they say.. um wait...Thor is not a women and Thor well lets just say if its not the male Thor and he is not holding his hammer... Well it is not Thor... It would be like somebody giving my brother my name... Then saying they were me.... no I am far more then my name thank you a life time of walking in my shoes and you just cannot take my name and say your me...I am sorry I wish it worked that way.  To get his powers and his name does no justice to the real Thor and it insults him at the same time... Thor is a life time of adventures and then some and to just say...oh this is Thor you guys are crazy..... Well the insanity is trying to sell a bad idea and expect people to want hot sauce and some cold drink and try to choke it down.. Oh yes please give me more I can see where your going through the flames of my hot sauce Gringo......no and hell no. What has happened to Marvel is this... They stopped hearing the fans. They stopped caring and when they did that... people stopped dreaming and they stopped saying...I can no longer see how a company that once preached about hero's and heard the cry of the average consumer... Has become the villain and does not care about any of its market or the people the fund it.. Almost like the Fred Flintstones show where he learned to sing and everybody loved him.. Then one day he messed up and they said...Square he has lost it.. Then nobody cared... If they do not change marvel will be the square and lose all the fans that stood behind them and said... This I will defend... but it was one way... Marvel said... We do not have your back fans...eat crow...you just have to eat some crow... The fans say.. we have ate more then enough of our fare share of Crow and we want no more... Bring back the hero in super hero...I male or female it maters not if they forgot what protecting the weak is about and defending a idea.... Inspire others to do better... Marvel no longer knows how to inspire anything. Shameful.

So Thor is no longer worthy to hold Mjolnir and so reverts back to 836 AD Thor wielding an axe.  Another person has been gifted with Mjolnir and all the power that comes with it as bequeathed by Odin. In the past Blake, Masterson and others were used as vessels for Thor to make his return. Others like Beta Ray Bill were gifted with Mjolnir and his power but retained their own individuality. Thor now being unworthy is not stripped of his individuality, neither has he taken on another identity, so how can two Thor's exist at the same time? I am completely stumped. We talk about the identity of this new Thor as unknown even to Thor Odinson. So this new Thor does have her own identity. So when she possesses Mjolnir she must also possess Thor Odinson's spirit thus transforming into thor but retaining her womanly figure. THIS IS JUST TOO MUMBO JUMBO FOR ME. I will see where this pans out but I have a strong feeling I am no longer worthy to read future Thor comics. JUST SAYING.

              What happened to Marvel.

This is the worst idea ever!  I've been buying comics digitally for the last several years but the Marvel story lines keep getting lamer.

              Pathetic! LAME!

They actually substantiate the fact that “this Thor” is not a God with this attempt to show diversity, attract female readers and be an “equal opportunity superheroes employer”. Excuse me, could I have a gender change please to up readership and exclude Thor from Walhalla? Let’s make Sif male so they do not encounter potential conflicts with love interests and their respective orientation.

Another comic to be discontinued on my monthly order…I know it’s temporary but it’s not enticing enough to keep buying a book to support their inability to come up with good ideas and instead follow this avenue as a sales tool. (Tools indeed.)

Let’s do a year of Marvel Babies meet Marvel Muppets to lose the rest of the readership. That would likely be more fun than Thorina, Thor-Girl, Wonder-Thor, Goddess of Blunder, Thor-Thumbelina, The Mjolness, Beta-Rita-Belle, Thoress the speed-knitter and Thorabella the nail in the coffin of Marvel’s God of Thunder. Swing thy hammer lady!

              Pathetic!

I'm beginning to think this is going to be like a Batman / Bane / Azarel kind of deal.

Right? Batman was injured by Bane. Has to take some time off.

Gets someone to wear the suit, play the role, while he's recuperating.

So she's wielding the power of Thor ... but she's NOT Thor.

I get the impression that there's a real panic that Marvel is going to give Thor some kind of gender reassignment.

But it's clearly stated Thor lost and arm and this is a completely different character who will appear ALONGSIDE the Thor we all know.

As far as being "unworthy" , we'll see. I'm betting Thor will give up Mjolnir, temporarily at least, while he gets fitted for a prosthetic.

What I don't get yet, is why the new Goddess of Thunder is called Thor?? It's his own name. Odin gave it to him as a father not a god. It has nothing to do with his hammer or powers. It is just his name. It would be like the new Cap is called Steve Rogers... The name doesn't come as a package with the hammer or shield. That is just tupid. The Hammer was a gift only for him. That is why the inscription says Power of Thor. You get HIS powers when you are worthy. The power of the God of Thunder.

You can't walk in, grab someone's lunch box that says "property of Thor". Then you eat his sandwich and by doing that you prentend that your name is Thor now and the food is legally yours lol. This is actually identity theft XD ... Does SHIELD know this?  I can see why someone else becomes the God of Thunder. I just don't understand why he is even losing his own name. Is he still the son of Odin? Or is that taken away too?? I demand a DNA test now!!!! XD

I deride this because it is weak, gimmicky, pandering, unimaginative, and silly.

And when Thor sales drop even lower and desperation sets in, I will same the same thing when they bring back the Odinson a la "New Coke/Classic Coke"... because seriously, we all know this will happen.

I'm surprised that no one has commented on the drawing of Thor Odinson from the "Unworthy" promo image. Looks to me like his left arm is either encased in a metal sleeve or is it a prosthetic arm? Will this be the story where we learn how Old King Thor lost his arm and took an arm from the Destroyer to replace his lost appendage?

If you actually read anything at all about this besides the marvel press release (which admittedly was kind of poorly done), you would be really excited for this new comic. They aren’t getting rid of Thor and they aren’t turning him into a woman. A completely separate character (who most likely has been seen before in God of Thunder) is getting his hammer and the power that goes along with it. Thor Odinson will still be around, rocking a wicked beard and his old axe. Who knows, he might be in the new series, he might be in a group title or he might get a run all his own. The fact is, it's too early to say anything about it. Most importantly, the new series going to be written and created by the same writer who writes Thor: God of Thunder (who obviously knows what he’s doing considering how good the current series is).

I feel like a solid 75 percent of the people complaining on this thread aren’t even reading the current Thor, and honestly who cares what your opinion is about it if you weren’t buying it in the first place.

If you want actual information on the series instead of just mindlessly complaing that marvel is going pc, here and here are links to interviews.

WORST. THING. EVER! I want to aim a cat-launcher at someone RIGHT NOW!

I read somewhere else that Marvel is trying to bring fresh female characters into the MU to get more fangirls into comics. I AM a fangirl myself and in fact I would DROP a title because of a radical replacement like that!!!! It has nothing to do with too few female hero characters. Girls are just not into comics mostly, this won't get them! Deal with it. Don't ignore the long time fans now or they will leave! I wanna read great stories above anything else. Most of my favorite characters are MALE. I am a girl. That's why.

I loved Thor ever since I was a child, so please PLEAAAASE don't ruin this now. After such a long time of that stupid "Mighty Thor" series I only want that this wonderful character gets the acknowledgment that he deserves. I thought Mr. Aaron wrote a briliant run so far and understood us fans very well, but Odin's beard I was so wrong. The posts below are proof enough.

Marvel, you can wait and see what happens. I know it already. Everyone except you knows where this is leading to... Long time fans will leave, no new fans will come. Reboot..... You really want to waste money and time on ... THIS?? I can wait till things come back to normal. And they will eventually one day.

You are ok that such a "sacred entity" would become a hero in a comic book with alterations done to fit the storyline but change his gender and suddenly everything becomes blasphemous. You should say NO to having Thor as part of the Marvel Universe before saying NO to him being changed into a woman. You miss the point don't you? The entire staff of Marvel Comics gained the right to do whatsoever in their Storyline the moment he was used as part of the Marvel Universe 60+ years ago...so too late to whine. @milesmoralez I suggest you go look at the comic books sales for the last few months and see if you think women and girls aren't being targeted enough. They are, only it's the DC Comics women (Harlee Quinn, Batwoman, Batgirl, Wonder Woman) who outsell their Marvel female counterparts (Black Widow, Ms Marvel, She Hulk) by A WIDE MARGIN.

If you think there is this allegedly huge audience of women ready to hand over their hard earned cash for a female Thor and not some cheap gimmick to raise raise Thor's lackluster sales and compete with DC for that small audience of females (compared to their male counterparts) that actually buy comics I don't know what else to tell you. That's the same kind of 'pie in the sky' thinking that honestly believed putting poorly attended WNBA games on Lifetime got more women to watch them.

You're right on one thing. Not many people buy Thor's comics and the one's that do are mostly male. And they are smart enough to see through a pure gimmick that only gets it's mileage through it's shock value. If Marvel wants to create female lead comic books that actually sell then I suggest they do what DC Comics does and hire better writers, because it's pretty obvious DC is doing a superior job.

@milesmoralez I love when fanatic sycophants defend their comics but lash out at the majority of OTHER fans venting their displeasure (especially love the snide fanboy comment; like stupidity, hypocrisy know no bounds).

As a self proclaimed advocate of self-education, perhaps you should practice some literacy yourself; most of the posts are NOT about him being physically turned into a woman, it's about them using poorly retread storytelling completely giving his very identity to showcase a "Wonderfully Strong Female lead". So they are practicing semantics: though they are not physically transforming Thor, they ARE storyboard transforming Thor which amounts to the same thing.

Not only has this been done (poorly) a multitude of times prior, they are trying to sell it (again) as the next big thing.

As to the Current Author, he is so awesome at writing for Thor, that Wil Moss stated in a interview that the series needed a "shot in the arm", which means it's sales under Jason Aaron's writing have NOT been optimal. Which is the SAME person writing the NEW AMAZING NON-SEX-Change /SEX CHANGE issues :P.

Or the fact that they don't mention that Eric Masterson and Beta Ray Bill kept their own names, they were NOT given Thor's name as a new character like this horrid publicity stunt.

@milesmoralez Please go away, I have been reading Thor for 3 decades, and will continue to "mindlessly complain" as much as possible. If you truly read Thor, or any other big name comic (Hulk) you would know that this isn't the first time we have seen this non-sense. So maybe before you start ranting on those of us that have been around awhile, maybe you should educate yourself in the ways of Marvel.

@milesmoralez Ok, I admit that you have a point on seeing where this is leading to first, instead of complaining before it gets started. I might even give it a try. But only, as you also said, because Aaron DID a good job on GOT before. I am reading the GOT series and loving it. Till now...

I don't think anyone of the fans would complain about it, if they would not truly care about Thor. Don't blame the fanboys/fangirls for wanting to share their opinions. This is what a comment section is made for. Since they had to nuke the forum -_-

I have been reading Thor since Dan Jurgens vol 2 #1 and I am trying to complete the collection with older TPB's as they are released. Currently getting TBP's Stan Lee's and Walt Simonson's run. I know what I am talking about and I care about the character.

Marvel is planning to replace other characters too. Captain America. There goes my number two favorite character. Iron Man will be changed into ... I have no idea tbh

I have read the infos that Marvel was releasing. This has nothing to do with education. It's Marvel's job to promote their releases! I have read the interview btw. I am also reading what they throw at me in the newsletter or on the homepage. Just because someone is not happy with this new Thor doesn't mean he is not "educating" himself or not a fan.

@Eb0nst0rm @milesmoralez You might not like Jason Aaron, but he seems to be one of Marvel's top three talents right now, and definitely had a lot of success with Wolverine & the X-Men before he left it. He's personally my favorite current comic author, and I really love what he's done with everything I've read by him. Historically, solo Avengers titles seem to have a hard time selling. I remember Thor was outright cancelled back around when Bendis started on New Avengers a decade or so ago. I think Thor's a great character, but he's so crazy powerful and often one-dimensionally good and virtuous, that an ongoing solo title can be a hard sell for most people. So "shot in the arm" may not refer to Aaron's writing ability, but simply the difficulty of attracting interest in the comic to begin with.

@milesmoralez Also, let's not forget WHY Marvel said they are doing it: “THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into the Marvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.”

@Lady_Sif @milesmoralez To me, this whole "Thor not being worthy anymore" thing seems like a very natural outgrowth of the story Jason Aaron is already telling, what with all his early focus on the young, pre-Mjolnir Thor. My guess would be that Aaron keeps doing what he's doing now, switching between multiple views, but New Thor will replace Young Thor, and maybe Old Thor's granddaughters will take on a more prevalent role in the future parts. And this isn't happening till October, so Aaron still has a couple months to lead into it more. Only if the series becomes popular enough to support two titles could I see him separating the two. I definitely don't think Aaron would abandon Current Thor entirely—he likes him way too much, and writes him way too well for that.

I don't think Remender is abandoning Steve Rogers, either. I actually really liked the Heroic Age period when he was the supercop guy over all the Avengers, while Bucky was Cap. I imagine he'll be returning to a similar kind of role.

I couldn't get into Kieron Gillen's Iron Man, so I'm kind of neutral about that one, since I don't really know what's been going on with him in his title before the change. I still think of him as Civil War Iron Man, so a darker tone shift doesn't seem off to me. Plus he's already being super-secretive and manipulative in his whole Illuminati role in New Avengers, which is what I've been reading him in.

@boomiegard @Lady_Sif It already happens. Why do I actually think about girls now?? The transformation has begun.. I am into the MALE Thor and they turn me into something else with their brainwashing new title... "AAAAAAAAARGH!"

But... *whispers* C'mooon.... Tell me that was NOT on your mind when you wrote it. tehehe...

Ok everyone! Vote for me if you wanna see that happen and I become the new writer of "THOR - Unworthy! ... and it feels so goo-hoood" lol XD

@Eb0nst0rm Kudos to you, Ebonstorm! Well said! I was gonna do a follow up after your post, but you've pretty much said all that needs to be said, so no point.
