Yesterday, in speaking of September’s AVENGERS #19, Jonathan Hickman and Leinil Francis Yu discussed the expanded role of Captain Marvel, how Earth’s Mightiest Heroes become prisoners of war and what the Galactic Council will face during Infinity.
Now behold an exclusive first look at Yu’s cover to AVENGERS #20—also out in September—featuring some new yet familiar faces.
“[These are] other ‘Ex Nihilos’ created by the Alephs sent out into the universe by the Builders to encourage or deter the evolution of sentient species,” reveals Hickman of the imposing and their ties to characters and concepts introduced in his first arc of AVENGERS.

“They were extrapolations from [artist] Jerome [Opena] and Jonathan’s first Ex Nihilo,” adds Yu of designing the newcomers. “Jonathan gave me the freedom to play around with it a bit which was fun to do.”
As Hickman alluded to, this issue will heavily feature the Builders, the mysterious and powerful force also first seen during his initial AVENGERS story that will serve as one of the primary antagonistic forces as Infinity plays out.
“Throughout Infinity we’ll be revealing the reasons why the Builders are cutting through the galaxy,” the writer promises. “Along the way, we’ll learn more about their motivations, why they are doing this.”
Pick up INFINITY #1 on August 14, and then follow the story into AVENGERS and NEW AVENGERS!
