Every week, we'll tap one creator to browse Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited and pick their favorite issue they've worked on from the expansive catalog. This week: HOUSE OF M: AVENGERS writer Christos Gage.
"It's hard not to pick IRON MAN/CAPTAIN AMERICA: CASUALTIES OF WAR, which allowed me to draw on so much Marvel history and be part of a big, important event…but my very first Marvel story, in SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #12, holds a very special place in my heart. It's a short done-in-one bringing back the Big Wheel, a favorite 'Z-list' villain of mine from the 1970's. Big Wheel has changed his ways and joined Vil-Anon, a twelve-step program for reformed super-villains. He's trying to make amends for having attacked Spidey before by helping him fight crime...but of course he keeps screwing it up. This story was so much fun to write, Mike McKone did a great job with the art, and I got to not only write Spider-Man and Big Wheel, but sneak in cameos from other favorites like the Blob—in prison, stealing the cupcake—and the Hypno-Hustler! Of course, what makes it the most special to me is that it was my first Marvel work...all the great opportunities I've had at Marvel came from this!"
