NYCC 2013: All-New Marvel NOW! New Warriors

Christopher Yost and Marcus To infuse a classic Marvel concept with a different kind of war!

By Andrew Wheeler

It's been too long since a team of New Warriors has flourished in the Marvel Universe, and far too long since familiar faces have operated under that banner. Now, in the hands of writer Christopher Yost and artist Marcus To, NEW WARRIORS makes a 2014 comeback, complete with Justice, Speedball, and even Nova—well, a Nova.

Joining Vance, Robbie and Nova newbie Sam Alexander will be a cast of characters representing every corner of the Marvel Universe, from Atlantis to Attilan. That includes Hummingbird, a divinely-powered character Yost introduced in the pages of SCARLET SPIDER—not to mention Kaine himself—and a new take on old school Timely hero Sun Girl, who will debut in a forthcoming arc of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TEAM-UP.

What force could bring such different characters together? We spoke to Yost and To in order to learn more about the newest New Warriors.

Marvel.com: The New Warriors are back to face a new war; what's the mission statement for this new team?

Christopher Yost: Evolution has gone off the rails. There's super humans, mutants, Inhumans, Atlanteans, clones, alien hybrids, demigods—humanity's future is no longer certain as the dominant life form on the planet. The war that's being waged now is one of ethnic cleansing, so to speak; someone wants to save humanity by killing everything else.

The New Warriors are a collection of everything listed above, fighting for the right to survive. They're eight people from different corners of the Marvel Universe, coming together to do the right thing, to be heroes.

They're not kids, they're not seasoned heroes for the most part, but they're idealists. Sometimes it's okay to be a hero for the sake of being a hero; to be with a team because they're your friends, because it's fun.

Sometimes the world just needs saving.

Marvel.com: The new team includes two New Warriors originals, which is great news for old school fans. How have Justice and Speedball changed since we saw them last?

Christopher Yost: It's a different world. They've both had some pretty rough experiences, especially Speedball. But they're both still fighting the good fight, which speaks volumes about both of them. Idealists suffer the most.

Marvel.com: Are you giving them new looks?

Marcus To: They have stayed true to their original designs; we've updated the look a tad to make their aesthetic a bit more current.

Marvel.com: The rest of the team are new New Warriors. What can you tell me about them?

Christopher Yost: Scarlet Spider is a clone. Justice is a mutant. Haechi an Inhuman. Speedball a super human. Hummingbird a magical demi-god. Nova has alien powers. Water Snake is an Atlantean. Sun Girl is a plain ol' human. They're all weird and exceptional in their own way, but they're all coming together as a team. Eventually.

Marcus To: The New Warriors [are] a little less like a standard team; each character has a different look that mirrors who they are and where they come from whether they be Inhuman, Atlantean, etc.

Christopher Yost: That's exactly right. It's easy for each member to go be with their own kind, but they've come together for the greater good. To save everyone.

Marvel.com: This sounds like a book that'll let you guys explore the full breadth of the Marvel Universe; what are you most excited to take on?

Christopher Yost: I'm most excited to take on everything. This isn't an X-book or a Spider-book, we can and will tackle the entire Marvel Universe.

Marcus To: I'm most excited to really dive deep in the relationships between all the members of the New Warriors. I'm pretty new to the property so I want to concentrate on the team.

Christopher Yost: And that character-y stuff!

Marvel.com: There are a lot of old school fans of the New Warriors, but you'll want to lure in some new fans as well. What's your pitch to those two different audiences?

Marcus To: I like to think that if we keep honest with the existing characters and continue to make the new members fun and current, we'll be able to reel in new fans and old.

Christopher Yost: ‘Nuff said!
