The evil-doers of the Marvel Universe must have missed Havok's birthday invite, because they've all conspired to ensure that Alex Summers turns 45 in the middle of a futuristic nightmare-scape. Havok and the Wasp are currently on the run in UNCANNY AVENGERS, as the mutant hero's tenure as leader of the Avengers Unity Squad takes a turn towards the apocalyptic. But anyone familiar with Havok's track record as a key member of the X-Men, the inspirational leader of X-Factor, and recently as the captain of the space-faring Starjammers knows that there's no situation he can't handle.
Havok first debuted 45 years ago in UNCANNY X-MEN #54, by Arnold Drake and Don Heck. His introduction way back in 1969 as Cyclops' younger brother came as a surprise to readers who were led to believe that Scott Summers had no siblings. The X-Men first met Alex at his college graduation.
The X-Men should have known that they wouldn't be able to go to an ordinary event like a college graduation without super villains getting involved. A pair of henchmen all dressed up like ancient Egyptian candy canes ambushed Alex, using a "ring of silence" to knock him out cold.
The candy colored kidnappers took Alex back to their leader, the Living Pharaoh. The super villain pegged Alex Summers as a descendant of ancient pharaohs – who were all mutants, by the way – and therefore capable of challenging him in his quest for power. Why the Living Pharaoh played ancient Egyptian dress up with Alex's unconscious body remains a mystery.
The X-Men rushed to the younger Summers brother's defense, fighting off the White Stripes lookalikes and freeing Alex from captivity. In his excitement, Cyclops' accidentally revealed his secret identity to his younger brother. Not only did Scott not tell his teammates about Alex, but he also didn't tell Alex about his life as a super hero. Apparently Cyclops had a long-lasting love affair with both Jean Grey and secrets.
Before Scott could come clean, the Living Pharaoh struck again. When the dust cleared, Cyclops woke up to police officers accusing him of murdering the Pharaoh. The misunderstanding would eventually get cleared up, and Alex would develop the ability to absorb and redirect cosmic energy. Unfortunately, his first appearance would not be the last time that secrets interfered in his life. That's the price you pay when you're a super hero!
