The Guardians of the Galaxy may be stationed in the far reaches of space, but the shockwaves of the Watcher's death will ripple outwards from Earth—and threaten to rip the ragtag team apart!

Team leader Star-Lord has spearheaded this new Guardians initiative while keeping one very important piece of information all to himself. Now, the truth behind his escape from death's clutches will come to light, and his teammates might not be happy about what they learn.

Peter Quill's survival story will be revealed in this August's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #18, an issue that teams regular writer Brian Michael Bendis with artist Ed McGuinness. We spoke with Bendis about the upcoming tie-in to find out what's in store for Marvel's cosmic crusaders!

Marvel.com: This tie-in deals with the Cancerverse, the alternate reality where readers last saw Peter Quill before his return. Were you waiting for this event to reveal what happened in there?

Brian Michael Bendis: We were. Original Sin has been planned for years, so I was very aware that this would be the perfect place to unveil this storyline. I know waiting for this was frustrating for some longtime readers, but every story comes at its own time

Marvel.com: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #5 dropped a lot of hints about the book’s future, including Captain Marvel joining and the crossover with ALL-NEW X-MEN. How far ahead are you planning? Have you dropped any hints already about what happened in the Cancerverse?

Brian Michael Bendis: We have literally been dropping hints since the Guardians guest-starred in AVENGERS ASSEMBLE. I have known exactly what we were doing with this from the moment I agreed to do the book, but I thought it would be best to slow burn the reveal and get any potential new readers—which I am so happy that we have so many—involved in this story, which they may not have read during the previous GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY run. Now, not only does this reveal answer a question for diehard readers, it also tells something about the characters to the newer readers.

Marvel.com: Will any of the other Guardians have any secrets exposed?

      Brian Michael Bendis: Yes.

Marvel.com: Peter Quill wasn't the only character to disappear in the Cancerverse. Is there any chance of us finding out what happened to Rich Rider, aka Nova, in this storyline?

Brian Michael Bendis: Absolutely. A one hundred percent yes.

Marvel.com: The Guardians’ ranks are growing with Captain Marvel and Venom. Are they playing a role in these tie-ins?

Brian Michael Bendis: This particular story involves Gamora and Peter Quill. It’s about their relationship and what the secret means to their friendship and partnership; but there is a lot going on with Captain Marvel and Venom, don’t you worry.

Marvel.com: What’s it like working with Ed McGuinness on this story?

Brian Michael Bendis: I’m so excited to work with him. For years [writer] Jeph Loeb would not let anybody near Ed. He brings a very powerful dynamic and an almost Kirby like ambience to the entire production. This is a very larger-than-life story with a very larger-than-life cast of characters, so Ed is the perfect candidate.

Read ORIGINAL SIN #1 this week, then learn Peter Quill’s secrets beginning in August with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #18

Rich has been away for too long.  It's time to bring him back, even if he's just a background character who's off doing stuff in space with the Nova Corps.  Please don't do what I think you're going to do and kill him off.  Rich is my Peter Parker and my favourite superhero.  There's room enough for both Rich and Sam.  They're both very different characters, and it's been established for 30 years that it's a corps.  Even the new Kid Nova is a Black Nova.  Richie is a regular Nova, the Nova Prime.  We've seen so much character development in Rich in his last few series and he's gained a lot of respect, credibility and fans, especially through the Annihilation - Thanos Imperative storyline.  I don't normally write in on stuff like this, I'm more of the silent kind of fan, but I want you to know that there's another Richard Rider fan out there who's been quietly hoping for his return over the last few years.

I was wondering How did Peter Quill"Starlord" survived the Cancerverse ?,that would explain How Thanos survived and returned to the Marvel Universe,But knowing the Marvel Writers, Richard Rider "NOVA" didn't make it,they have a New NOVA now "Sam Alexander, why would they want to bring back original NOVA, Unless they kill "Sam-NOVA' Sam's got his own series, joined the New Warrors,Guest Stars in Origina Sin, But I do love it when they Draw the Original Nova, character on the front cover making us think they're back, thats how you sell comics

I also MUST find out about Richard Rider the one true Nova. He better get his own book or at the very least become a major player in another team book. Marvel I need him back, don't fail me now.

Awsome cover with Rich Rider the real NOVA!!!! I'm hoping for his legitimate return since in my opinion Rich Rider NOVA is the best Marvel Hero. I'm a long time reader of comics but I've gotten away from Marvel since NOVA was cancelled (I mean the real NOVA) but have been keeping an eye out for any mention of his return and or what happened that Star Lord reappeared from the Cancerverse but not Rich Rider. Can't wait till August. Hopefully there's enough interest that Marvel decides to give him a regular series.

I'm beyond psyched that this is a thing. It's such a mystery as to what happened after Thanos Imperative. About to start reading the entirety of The Annihilation Wars too so I can pace myself to the release of this release. Did love the Richard Rider I got to read in TI though! He's a boss!

It's time to get Rich back ... this new "Nova" really needs a legit mentor if Marvel wants the fans to accept him.

@chard5014 Couldn't have said it better myself.  Marvel needs to end the "Bendis Era" and give the Guardians back to someone who can actually write stories that have depth. I'm tired of terrible character cameos and page after page of wasted frames.

@Jaxxon328 @goldenbear6 @chard5014 That may be so, but after reading Bendis' take on what happened after the Thanos Imperative, it completely validates that he is destroying an amazing group of characters.  If you read the Thanos Imperative and then read Bendis' latest issues you would find it hard to believe he actually read what had taken place. It is two issues where nothing happens. They are just putting out some nice artwork every month and riding the GOTG high right now. Read the DnA run and in one issue more takes place than a year and a half of this new series.
