Unlike a lot of her super powered peers, we never got to see Daisy Johnson's learning curve. She first appeared fully formed as Quake, an 18-year-old agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. hand-picked by Nick Fury to receive level 10 clearance – the highest level attainable. In addition to being Fury's personal weapon for shaking bad guys up, Johnson forged her own path as the commander of the Secret Warriors, as a card-carrying Avenger, and as a recent director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Let's take a look back at her not-so-humble beginnings.
Quake first appeared 10 years ago this month in SECRET WAR #2 by Brian Michael Bendis and Gabriele Dell'Otto. She passed for just a regular airplane passenger, remaining unnoticed by Captain America, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Spider-Man.
The heroes had all been secretly gathered and placed on that plane by Nick Fury, who had a clandestine mission that needed to be carried out. The assembled operatives didn't even notice Daisy until they touched down in Latveria and rendezvoused with Black Widow.
Fury had formed this team to respond to the threat posed by the Latverian government, who had started supplying dangerous technology and funding to a number of American super villains. The specific response: overthrowing Latveria's government and their leader, Lucia von Bardas.
Following the mission, Fury wiped everyone's minds of what exactly had transpired. The affected heroes explained away their buried memories as nightmares, until von Bardas returned a year later to exact her revenge. The truth came out just as the villainess attempted to trigger a massive explosion. Thankfully, Quake chose that exact moment to make her dramatic return and rattled von Bardas into submission.
Fury then came clean about the mission. He had recruited Quake to topple Latveria's capital, mercilessly killing all the villains therein and wrecking the evil country's government.
Johnson then found herself under S.H.I.E.L.D. scrutiny; director Maria Hill had never even heard of this teenage agent, and questioned whom she really swore allegiance to now that Fury had apparently fled the country. Following her intense interrogation, Quake got the call that would change her life.
Fury lived, and he still had instructions for her. Quake would go on to play a leading role in SECRET WARRIORS, where her working relationship with Nick Fury would really be tested. She even became one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in AVENGERS (2010) #19.
