Every week, we'll tap one creator to browse Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited and pick some of their favorite work from the expansive catalog. This week: MARVEL ZOMBIES writer Robert Kirkman
"MUTANT 2099 was my favorite Marvel book that I never got to do I pitched it around the same time I started MARVEL TEAM-UP. My friend and super talented artist Khary Randolph did designs and we were off to the races, but it never happened. A month or so after I pitched it I was asked to do the Marvel Knights 2099 fifth week event—I jumped at the chance to have five books ship in the same month because I'm crazy like that. It was decided along the way that MUTANT 2099 would be one of those books, as kind
of a try-out to see if we could do a whole series.
"Sadly, Marvel Knights 2099 didn't set the world on fire, so the concept was shelved. I did get to come back and feature the characters in MARVEL TEAM-UP during the "League of Losers" story arc running through issues #15-18, so that was cool. It would have been an awesome series. That one-shot has all kinds of cool Easter eggs no one will ever notice because it has to do with things that were in the series pitch, like Doctor Doom's mask and cape hanging up in the background on the first page. Cool stuff."
