A dark Captain America: not a bad way to describe the Russian
super-soldier gone horribly wrong, Omega Red. Like Cap he became something more than a man and slept away the years until awakening in the present—but unlike Cap, the man once called Arkady Rossovich entered willfully into a dark and menacing life.
Omega Red counts Wolverine as one of his most challenging adversaries and vice versa. With heightened strength, a healing factor of his own and life-leaching tentacles, this sleeper agent has given Logan some of the worst trouble of his long, long life.
X-MEN v2 #4 (1992)
Resuscitated from a deep sleep for the sole purpose of capturing Wolverine, Omega Red looked forward to once again facing his old foe. The Russian set a trap for the X-Men and with the aid of the mystical ninjas known as the Hand succeeded in snatching Gambit and Rogue. Logan arrived too late to save his teammates but recognized the stench of his enemy and made plans to even the score.
X-MEN v2 #7 (1992)
Captured by Matsu'o Tsurayaba, who had awakened Omega Red in the first place, Wolverine endured torture to unlock the secret location of a "carbonadium synthesizer," something Red dearly desired. The torture brought Wolverine to the brink of complete anguish until his fellow X-Men arrived to aid their comrade. Omega trounced the diminutive mutant but was thankfully routed with the help of Beast, Jubilee and Psylocke. Tsurayaba and his charge then escaped in the X-Men's Blackbird.
X-MEN v2 #18 (1993)
Asked by the Russian government to bolster their struggle against the Soul Skinner, the X-Men flew to the town of Neftelensk. There, Omega Red battled the Skinner but ultimately lost and became a weapon to use against the incoming mutant heroes. Wolverine entered into a savage melee with the super-soldier but Red's mutant death spores turned the tide and Logan, along with his comrades, once again tasted defeat from his powerful foe.
WOLVERINE v2 #174 (2002)
Wolverine's closest friends and allies came under brutal attack by the combined might of Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike. The two villains cruelly carved the address where they could be found into the back of Yukio, a clue for Logan to find his kidnapped adoptive daughter, Amiko. An ambush awaited and Wolverine fell to a brutal beatdown delivered by Red and Deathstrike before being hauled like garbage in front of another of his greatest enemies, Sabretooth.
WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #7 (2006)
The carbonadium synthesizer once again played a major role in the struggle between Wolverine and Omega Red. The only thing able to give the Russian relief from his condition, the synthesizer had fallen into many hands over the years, thanks in large part to Logan. A new battle began with Omega Red again proving a mighty enemy, and a weakened Wolverine found himself beaten but strangely not killed by his opponent.
