Wolverine has taken on some tough characters in his day, from the Hulk to Magneto, but this time out, he might just have bitten off more than he can chew.
Why? Because this time, in a three-part series exclusive to Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited, Wolverine will be fighting a god.
Written by Frank Tieri, WOLVERINE/THOR tells a tale of old enemies, improbable match-ups, and a fight that may decide the very fate of the world. It all begins when Wolverine finds himself at the mercy of some of his greatest adversaries and ends in a dust-up between the Canadian and the Norse God that promises to shake the heavens.
The choice to bring the story online was inspired by two separate factors, both connected to the hit film "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."
"For the theatrical release of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine,' we published an exclusive Digital Comic featuring Wolverine in a near feral state after busting out of the Weapon X facility called WOLVERINE: HUNGER," recalls Vice President of Content and Programming for Marvel Digital Media Group John Cerilli. The project proved such a success, Cerilli knew it should only be a matter of time before MDCU introduced more original Wolverine Digital Comics.
The second catalyst came in the form of the DVD release of 'Origins'.
"We wanted to make sure we had something cool, new and different for Wolvie fans to sink their claws into when they're visiting Marvel.com for information about the DVD release," explains Cerilli.
However, a desire alone does not create a story. Without a plot and the talent to bring it to life, an idea can be nothing but an idea. The talent came in the form of writer Frank Tieri, no stranger to Logan. The plot was born of a simple, but intriguing question: have Thor and Wolverine ever fought?
"We've [never] really seen Wolverine and Thor throw down in a major confrontation," Cerilli points out. "There may have been some scuffles between the two and they may have gotten caught up in some big time battles between X-Men and Avengers, but focusing on Wolverine and Thor going at each other-that just sounded like a whole lot of fun. Thunder God vs. The Best He is at What He Does? Sounds pretty appealing to me. Who doesn't want to see these two go at it?"
