Just when he thinks he's out, they're pulling him back in.

Writer Jason Aaron and artist Ron Garney, the creative team responsible for the hit "Get Mystique!" story from the pages of WOLVERINE, return to Marvel's most dangerous mutant this April with the new ongoing series WOLVERINE: WEAPON X. Less than a month before he hits the big screen in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," the highly-anticipated blockbuster starring Hugh Jackman that debuts in theaters on May 1, 2009, Logan will get back to his down and dirty roots while also pushing forward into the future.

"Wolverine's a great character and the kind that can fit in a lot of different situations," says editor John Barber. "This series is going to be about establishing the next group of Wolverine characters and settings.

WOLVERINE:
GET MYSTIQUE!

We're also making an effort that this book—while 100% in continuity—is friendly to new readers, most particularly those coming in from the movie. So we'll see more of Wolverine doing black-ops missions. Less yellow spandex and bright lights, more dark alleys and dark clothes."

As Barber notes, WOLVERINE: WEAPON X will focus not just on the title character, but the eclectic supporting cast of friends and foes he tends to gather around him. Logan can expect reunions with some old faces as well as introductions to new players looking to get inside his head.

"We're going to meet a new female reporter named Melita Garner who's going to be trying to find out more about this 'Logan' guy who moved to San Francisco with the rest of the X-Men," Barber reveals. "One returning cast member is David North, aka Maverick, aka Agent X. He went through the Weapon X program with Logan and was on Team X with him. He's de-powered, but has been doing intelligence work since the last time we saw him. He gives Logan a tip about some stolen Weapon X files in our first issue."

But while Wolverine, his allies and his enemies will no doubt drum up plenty of adventure and intrigue for readers, Barber credits the creative team in many ways as the real stars of the show.

"Jason is one of the real rising stars right now," he boasts of the WOLVERINE: WAPON X writer. "He really gets what makes Logan tick and has a lot of cool ideas. Jason had been wanting to get back to do more Wolverine and we wanted him back in the fold as soon as possible. He's got a great take on the character.

"And Ron—Ron was born to draw Wolverine, plain and simple. He's a fantastic comic book artist who really knows what he's doing. His Logan is nice and visceral, and Ron's storytelling is as intense as Logan is. [Jason and Ron] together, they just get along, see eye-to-eye and create great comics. Sometimes by luck or circumstance, a couple creators get thrown together and it just works."

Between his duties with the X-Men and Avengers as well as his various solo adventures, Wolverine certainly spreads himself somewhat thin across the Marvel Universe, but Barber promises WOLVERINE: WEAPON X will be like nothing else available today.

"For me, this book really makes me remember the excitement of that original WOLVERINE ongoing series," the editor explains. "It's something a little out of the ordinary from what we've seen with the character in all the other books he appears in. It's a little darker, but it's also got some genuine humor to it. It's a lot of fun and we're really working to make sure this gives you another facet of the character, different from what we're seeing in other books.

"I know some people might look at this and throw their hands up at the amount of Wolverine books…well, all I can say is, wait until you see what's going to happen in WOLVERINE after 'Old Man Logan' ends…"

You may have to wait until April for WOLVERINE: WEAPON X #1, but you can read Jason Aaron and Ron Garney on WOLVERINE right now on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited!

I like Wolverine as much as the next guy, but this is just plain ridiculous. Three Wolverine Ongoings, he was pushing it with two.

Will Nightcrawler be in this at all? I certainly hope so. We need to see more Kurt/Logan team-ups. I'm glad to see Maverick, whose real name is Christopher Nord by-the-way, will be back.
