Marvel creators and editors share the coolest places mutants have called home

On January 23 at 8:00 pm Eastern Standard Time, Marvel's mighty mutants experience an animated rebirth when "Wolverine and the X-Men" slashes its way onto the Nicktoons Network! Until then, stay glued to Marvel.com every day for sneak peeks, clips, exclusive art and looks back at the history of the X-Men in animation!
From mansions to asteroids, from Australia to San Francisco, the X-Men, their friends and their enemies have called a wide variety of exotic locales home over the years.

In the "Wolverine and the X-Men" animated series, the mighty mutants will find themselves on the move, so we had some of Marvel's creators and editors recommend places they might be able to catch a break—as well as some to stay away from.

It's Friday, so kick back, relax and enjoy.

The X-Men in
Australia

RICK REMENDER (writer of THE PUNISHER): I was really fond of the X-Men's Australian base. It gave that era a unique feeling, the team was forced to hide out in this dusty little town as they were not only thought dead but always on the run and in constant danger. Gateway was pretty damn cool as well.

JORDAN WHITE (Marvel assistant editor): By far, my favorite X-headquarters was Excalibur's lighthouse. It had me completely convinced that I would want to live in one, myself. Older and wiser now, I see that I would actually hate it. It was miles away from civilization. Where would I see movies? Where would I buy comics?!? No, it would probably be really uncomfortable. But reading EXCALIBUR, I was sold. It probably helps that Brian Braddock was so rich he could make it into an insanely luxurious place. Even when they made it look like a mushroom, it was sweet. Of course, it turned out to be some sort of multiversal fulcrum tower, and was destroyed, so we've probably seen the last of it. Still...we'll always have our memories.

The Morlocks

BILL ROSEMANN (Marvel editor): The dark, dank, drippy and dreary Morlock Tunnels! Now that's where the X-Men should live. They're a hated, feared and oppressed minority, right? So how come they're always living it up in beautiful and swank cribs? Let's see them on the run and hunkered down in the sewers!

MARC SUMERAK (writer of WEAPON X: FIRST CLASS): My all-time favorite X-HQ has to be Ship from X-FACTOR. Not only was it built by Celestials and stolen from Apocalypse himself, but it was also programmed with one of the coolest A.I. systems ever. Ship played a major role in X-Men history—including the lives of X-Factor, the New Mutants and Cable. And when it comes to attending to the needs of super heroes, I bet Ship could give Jarvis a run for his money any day!

MICHAEL HORWITZ (Marvel assistant editor): I'm torn between the Mojoverse, the Hellfire Club, and Detroit. I mean, really: who can choose between a

The Mojoverse

dimension where women have six arms, a Victorian bondage basement, and the car factory capital of America? I certainly can't.

JIM MCCANN (writer of NEW AVENGERS: THE REUNION): While the Mansion will always be the greatest HQ for the X-Men—a home, a school, and a training ground all in one...with a pool and softball field to boot!—I have a special place in my heart for the Australian Outback. It was so raw, forcing the X-Men to live in conditions that were the opposite of what they were used to.

ADAM POLLINA (artist of ANGEL: REVELATIONS): I'd have to say, that from reading the X-Men since my early childhood, the Hellfire Club always looked like the place where some proper

naughtiness went down with regularity. And the period piece clothing everyone had to wear I like too.

Anyway, the Hellfire Club would the base of operations I'd like to party in most

TODD NAUCK (artist of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY): My favorite X-Base is the original X-Factor's base, Ship. Ship was Apocalypse's sentient ship that X-Factor took control of and it turned itself into a tower in New York. Ship would talk to the team members, fashion rooms and vehicles for them, and help them out like "Jarvis meets 2001: A Space Odyssey." I miss Ship.

CHRISTOS GAGE (writer of AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE): I'm old school. The X-Mansion for me!
