With the release of
NEW AVENGERS: THE REUNION #1 this week and the "will they or won't they" reconciliation of Ronin and Mockingbird taking center stage in that series, folks all around the House of Ideas have been thinking about couples, duos and teams they'd like to see get back together.
On Wednesday,
the Secret Cabal weighed in, now it's Marvel's editors and creators' turn.
It's Friday, so kick back, relax and enjoy.
MARC SUMERAK (writer of WEAPON X: FIRST CLASS): Justice and Firestar are still one of my favorite Marvel Universe couples of all-time, even though they haven't been an item for a few years now. When I read Fabian Nicieza's original run on NEW WARRIORS, I was about the same age as
the characters on the team, so all of their interactions really rang true, especially the blossoming romance between two of the team's most prominent members. Vance and Angel's love stayed strong throughout their days as Avengers, but sadly fizzled out a couple years later. Since then, Vance has moved on and Angel has quit the hero biz, but I'll always keep my fingers crossed that this super-couple will someday reunite!
HUMBERTO RAMOS (artist of AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE): Now that Mary Jane is out of the picture, I'd love to see Peter Parker go back to his real, unforgettable first love—Aunt May!
Well, really I would love to see more of the Gwen Stacy clone.
RALPH MACCHIO (Marvel Senior Editor): I would most like to see Dr. Strange reunited with Clea. I don't really recall much of their time together and I don't even remember when they split or why. But it seemed like a relationship destined to last and now it's over. Doc has been going through some very hard times lately, and he needs a soft shoulder to lean
on—and I don't think Wong fits the bill. Also, Clea's relationship with Dormammu, Umar and Orini is fascinating and could be further explored. Clea could help Doc get himself back together and at the top his game. Clea, wherever you are, head back to that kooky little pad in Greenwich Village with the funny window and take back your man. He needs you!
REGINALD HUDLIN (writer of BLACK PANTHER): I
love the big break ups. I love that Scott isn't with Jean, I love that Spidey is single again, I love that the original Avengers are all split up and can't seem to get back together again.
But I do hope that the original Invaders come back together. The original Human Torch has been out of action too long.
MICHAEL HORWITZ (Marvel assistant editor): Some way, some how, I would
love for the Scarlet Witch and the Vision to get back together. To me, they were the most real couple in the Marvel Universe. She was this conflicted, tragic person who finally found peace with a genuine gentleman. So what if he had a carburetor instead of a heart? And if you
think your worst relationship ended bad, you ain't got nothing on these two. The many ups and downs of their romance made for soap of the highest order, but dang if it all doesn't tug at the old tear strings. Or make me want to marry an appliance.
TOM DEFALCO (writer of AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL): I would love to see a new series featuring Sgt. Fury and the original Howling Commandos. A war comic for people who hate war comics that's filled with action, humor and angst in the mighty Marvel manner—who could ask for anything more?
MIKE PERKINS (artist of THE STAND): There are a couple of intriguing possibilities for reunions. On the straight forward approach I always enjoyed the Iron Fist/Misty Knight relationship and I'd like to see that played up a lot more, but one that's full of intrigue and possibilities is a reunion between Daredevil and the now-not-a-Skrull Elektra. There's
so much heartache to mine there. They love and desire each other but they both know they really can't, and shouldn't, do anything about it. In the right hands—Mr. Brubaker, I'm looking at you—it could be storytelling gold!
AXEL ALONSO (Marvel Executive Editor): Wolverine and Doop. From what I hear, those two have a very complicated history.
CHRISTOS GAGE (writer of AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE): Beast and Wonder Man! I fondly remember their team ups in the pages of AVENGERS. They were the Rat Pack of superheroes!
PAUL CORNELL (writers of CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI13): Obviously, I'd have to opt for Pete Wisdom and Kitty Pryde. When she hasn't been lost in space, she's been shacked up with that other Peter, or, if you read Ultimate Kitty, that other, other, Peter. It's about time she got back to her one true love—and the Marvel Universe in general.
WILLIAM MESSNER-LOEBS (former writer of THOR): There was a period, when Sue Storm hooked up with the Sub-Mariner, during a phase when he was helping humanity by spreading chaos, rather than trying to destroy the surface world by spreading chaos. And Sue Storm, it seemed to me, was a girl with more appetite for chaos than she liked to let on. They made a cute couple, her blond and wistfully powerful, him all dark and broody.
JASON AARON (writer of GHOST RIDER): I'd love to see Daimon Hellstrom, the Son of Satan, get back together with occult terrorist Jaine Cutter, his love interest from the Warren Ellis run on HELLSTORM. That was certainly a match made in, well, hell.
BILL ROSEMANN (Marvel editor): Christos Gage and Humberto Ramos have begun to reunite the New Warriors in the pages of AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE, but we need Justice and Night Thrasher back together with the rest of the old school line-up! Firestar—retirement is for chumps!
Speedball—break him out of the psych ward! Nova—if Wolverine can be in a dozen books, surely the Human Rocket can be in two! Namorita—what, you think Nitro can kill the niece of Namor? Their mission: a hit-and-run guerilla war against H.A.M.M.E.R.! Fight the power!
KEVIN GREVIOUX (writer of ADAM: LEGEND OF THE BLUE MARVEL): I would love to see the classic Defenders get back together and
stay together. I'm talking the Hulk, Dr. Strange, Namor, the Silver Surfer, Valkyrie, Nighthawk, Gargoyle and Hellcat. That's a super-team, like the Avengers, that should always be active.
MIKE KELLY (Associate Editor of "The Amazing Spider-Man" newspaper strip): Well, when it comes to couples, I'm kind of old school. I remember the glory days of Daredevil and Black Widow, but nowadays, the new Captain America would be none too pleased with such a reunion, and after all Daredevil is a married man. This also applies to what I always considered one of the top love stories in Marvel's history, Cyclops and Jean Grey. But

there's a certain indomitable White Queen who would stand in the way, and Scott and Emma's relationship has been so well developed in recent years. Finally, there's Spider-Man and the Black Cat. With MJ and Peter separated by tragic choices, Spidey and his sexy feline paramour can swing across the New York skyline together again. Of course, in each of the above cases, their relationships could flourish, but they will always be complicated and dramatic and will keep us reading.
TOM BREVOORT (Marvel Executive Editor): The couple I'd like to see reunited is Uncle Ben and Aunt May. I've even got the way to do it. We'd start by seeing a series of phone calls by a mysterious grey-haired stranger to the Parker household. Then, as Aunt May came ever-closer to her upcoming marriage to Doctor Octopus, this would draw the mysterious stranger out of the woodwork—and it would turn out to be Ben Parker! He would reveal that he was required to fake his death and go underground in order to protect his secret life as a counter-espionage agent—he was the one who recruited Peter's parents into "the life"—but now that May is getting remarried, he finds he cannot stay away.

The burglar, it turns out, was looking for a coded microdot of top-secret classified information that Ben has hidden in the microscope that he and Aunt May had bought for Peter. Fortunately, it was only an early-model LMD that the Burglar shot.
In the end, while stunned by his reappearance, Peter would convince Ben that with great power there must also come great responsibility, and that he can't get in the way of Aunt May's happiness. Fortunately for all concerned, the groom, Doc Ock, trips and falls into a nuclear reactor while trying to kill Spider-Man, so everybody gets to walk away happy. Thereafter, Uncle Ben—in his new guise as Reilly Parker, with his hair dyed brown—functions as Spidey's aide-du-camp, making sure that his web-shooters are filled and using his old espionage contacts to get Pete tips on good photo opportunities. But this only lasts until Mary Parker, Pete's Mom, resurfaces—and now she's running A.I.M...
