IRON MAN #229 (1968)
Just when you thought only Captain America could dismantle political and military regimes, Iron Man tries his hand at taking a bite out of Communism in IRON MAN #229 (1968) by Bob Layton, David Michelinie and Mark Bright. Our metal-clad hero takes on not one, but two of the Soviet Union's secret weapons, Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo, in an in-your-face match up in the Siberian tundra. Tony's usual sarcasm and wit, complemented by the infusion of Cold War-era humor give the issue a light-hearted touch. Cap would be proud.
IRON MAN: THE INEVITABLE #2
Beautiful coloring and original storytelling devices help make IRON MAN: THE INEVITABLE #2 an Unlimited Highlights must-read for this week. Writer Joe Casey uses the email and text messages Tony Stark and Maggie Dillon exchanged in an invigorating display of character interaction, while artist Frazer Irving's coloring explodes off the pages—as exemplified in the issue's signature bout between Iron Man and the Ghost.
IRON MAN/CAPTAIN AMERICA: CASUALTIES OF WAR #1
In the ongoing battle for mutant rights, no one could ever expect Iron Man to be a driving force against it. Neither could Captain America in IRON MAN/CAPTAIN AMERICA: CASUALTIES OF WAR #1 by Christos Gage and Jeremy Haun. Differences in ideology and the Superhuman Registration Act drive such a wedge between the two—violence ensues. Heartbreaking and poignant throughout, the issue peels back the emotional layers of our two heroes as the bitter reality of a world without the Avengers comes to light.
IRON MAN: DIRECTOR OF S.H.I.E.L.D. #19
As if the cover alone doesn't make you say "Damn," this issue from Christos Gage and Roberto De La Torre puts the two icons at odds against each other in a petrifying brawl on the streets of Manhattan. Once again, Iron Man's support of the Superhuman Registration Act irks his former ally so much that it brings them to blows. Tony Stark's candid, no holds barred narration and thoughts fuel the fire!
IRON MAN: ENTER THE MANDARIN #1
Some people learn to hate, while others, such as the Mandarin, are simply born to do so. Joe Casey and Eric Canete take readers on a journey to learn more about one of Iron Man's greatest foes and how their rivalry came to be. The dark and brooding villain proves to be a fine foil to the laid-back playboy in this finely crafted adventure from the creative duo.
