Forget everything you knew about Marvel's sexiest assassin. In ULTIMATE ELEKTRA, a five issue limited series from Mike Carey and Salvador Larroca, our heroine doesn't have Stick or the Hand hovering nearby. Instead, struggling college dropout Elektra Natchios finds herself getting entangled with the mob in order to save her father and working class family in Queens.
Unable to find work and her dad's dry cleaning business in shambles, the now single Elektra can't seem to catch a break. Driven by her duty to help her family, she goes to work in the world of organized crime for her dubious cousins, Paul and Leander. After one particular assignment goes terribly wrong—thanks to the interference of assassin Benjamin Poindexter—Elektra's father winds up in jail. She soon makes a new deal with the Kingpin himself, Wilson Fisk. Not far behind, her ex-boyfriend, law student Matt Murdock keeps a close eye on his former flame as her life spirals downward.
Ultimate Elektra remains faithful to her Marvel Universe counterpart, while infused with added layers of emotional depth and complexity. Carey and Larroca earn high marks for restructuring the character's back story with new and unconventional elements. Fans will revel in the creative duo's fresh approach to the enduring character.
