To commemorate Marvel's 70th anniversary, this week we're shining the spotlight on some pretty far out comics from the 70's. Get the skinny on how some of your favorite marvel heroes got their start. Meet Howard the Duck, one of the strangest birds to ever set a webbed foot in a comic. Recently Howard's been feeling a bit depressed and thinks maybe a one way ticket to Hades will make him feel better. However, while attempting to scale a strange tower he meets a beautiful barbarian and the kooky Pro-Rata, a wizard with delusions of accountancy grandeur. But the mystic requires one final piece to complete his Cosmic Calculator and Howard's just the duck to find it for him. Hijinks and hilarity ensue in typical Marvel madness as Howard crosses dimensions, battles barbarians and somehow manages to save the day with a little help from none other than the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. You definitely need to read this issue to believe it. MARVEL PREMIERE #15 (1972)
While battling a seemingly inexhaustible foe, Danny Rand, the Immortal Iron Fist, draws on his past in hopes of finding the strength to defeat the menace called Shu-hu. As a young child, Danny's father, Wendell Rand, had taken he and his mother on an expedition to find the mystical city of K'un Lun. Unfortunately, Wendell found himself betrayed by his business partner, leaving Danny and his mother were left to fend for themselves in the harsh frozen wastes. Against all odds the two reach the path to K'un Lun, but in order for Danny to make his way across the ancient bridge his mother must literally throw herself to the wolves. Now an orphan, Danny fights for his parents, the honor of K'un Lun, and himself with a fist that becomes like a thing unto iron! SPIDER-WOMAN #1 (1978)
Jessica Drew has been an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., an operative of Hydra, and a member of the Avengers, but she came from humble and lonely origins. Jessica grew up on Wungadore Mountain with her mother, father, and Herbert Wyndham, better known as the High Evolutionary. As a girl, she came down with a lethal case of radiation poisoning, and to save her life her father and Herbert injected her with a spider serum that accelerated her evolution, giving her unique powers. Years later, alone in London, Jessica resorts to crime and draws the attention of the Scotland Yard, but after stopping a couple of hoods, she starts down the road to becoing the Spider-Woman we all know and love today. How often do nerdy high schoolers ask for super powers? Enter Richard Rider, grade-A dork and the new Centurion Nova-Prime! Dying Centurion Rhomann Dey pursues the cosmic terrorist, Zorr, a destroyer of worlds who has set his sights on Earth. In a last ditch attempt to save our world, Dey transfers his powers to the young Rider, a most unlikely candidate for a position as one of universe's most important heroes. After waking from an unconscious crash course from Rey, Rich discovers that he can fly and has gained titanic strength. Nova confronts Zorr and the two battle until Dey uses his last bit of power to destroy the villain, leaving Rich to contemplate his new powers and lot in life. LUKE CAGE, HERO FOR HIRE #1
Luke Cage grew up on the hard streets of Harlem with his friend Willis Stryker. They were the perfect team until Luke lost his taste for violence and got out of the scene, while Willis only sunk deeper into the criminal underworld. After Luke saved his friend from a couple of rival thugs but wouldn't help him get revenge, Willis decided to frame Cage for a crime he didn't commit. Sentenced to Seagate Prison, Luke agreed to be the new prison doctor's guinea pig in exchange for early parole and took a nice, warm chemical cocktail bath. The experiment interrupted by a vengeful guard, Luke exploded from the vat of chemicals with super strength and steel skin, breaking through the walls of the prison and fighting his way to freedom. Remember, dreams DO come true! Spider-Man (1994), Episode 8Spider-Man comes across an alien symbiote that attaches itself to him and forms a new black costume. Meanwhile, Eddie Brock accuses Spider-Man of stealing a valuable rock which was really stolen by the Rhino. Now Spider-Man faces a $1,000,000 bounty for his capture. X-Men (1992) - Season 2, Episode 22When Mystique forces Rogue to revisit her own past, Rogue's overpowering flashbacks cause her to relive the encounter with Ms. Marvel and drive her from the X-Men. Rogue struggles with Ms. Marvel's thoughts which are trapped in her mind and the two battle it out on the psychic plane. MSH: What The--?!
