By Jim Beard This October, one of Marvel's newest flights of fantasy gets a shot of mystic might as artist Jefte Palo joins the creative team on DOCTOR VOODOO: AVENGER OF THE SUPERNATURAL! Familiar to Marvel fans for his uniquely stylish art on such titles as BLACK PANTHER, MOON KNIGHT, WOLVERINE: THE ANNIVERSARY and PUNISHER: LITTLE BLACK BOOK, Palo's thrilled to join writer Rick Remender on the starkly spooky series. "I like his work so much, and his scripts are a great responsibility for any artist," he says of Remender. "I'll do my best to make a great book, and hope that together we can become a great team." Jericho Drumm, the former Brother Voodoo, won the title of Earth's Sorcerer Supreme in the pages of NEW AVENGERS. Now shouldering the title of Doctor Voodoo, Jericho seeks to make his own way into the realms of the supernatural and distinguish himself from his predecessor, Stephen Strange. "This is my first contact with the character, so I'm sure that as I draw more pages his personality will begin to show in the art," notes Palo. "We've already started on the first issue, but I think it's a bit too early to say that I've nailed it 100%. It's a good start, and the character will gain his personality and attitude thanks to Rick's scripts and my visual way." Reminder has cited many different sources he'll draw from to create Jericho's world, including real world voodoo mythology. The writer's research promises to ground the book in reality for its launch into other spheres and domains. "I'm with Rick in that line of thinking, and I'll be following his thoughts and advice," Paolo says. "But I'll be doing my own research, too, to bring in even more options and point of views. On one hand, magic opens a wide range of imagination to put on the pages. On the other hand 'fixing' our approach is important, too. But, really, my first look at the project made me want to do this book, that incredible challenge to show the world of magic." The series also opens the door on the world of monsters, a subject Palo warmed to as a child, citing the Hulk as an early favorite among Marvel's more misunderstood misanthropes. "A good approach to the Marvel monsters, I think, is to have a healthy respect for them and their history," he insists. "That's a good place to start when envisioning them, but I'll bring my personal point of view too."
