We recently sat down with Marvel's Talent Scout CB Cebulski to get the scoop on the new television series and game hitting the Japanese market "Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers"!
CB Cebulski: As Marvel's brand and characters become more and more recognized, especially in international territories, at times we need to create market specific products to help increase awareness and attract even more readers and viewers in other countries. Disk Wars is one such step we are taking in Japan.
With our partners at Disney, Bandai and Toei we're producing a weekly anime series starring the Avengers that will run on prime time TV there, along with an amazing new collectible game and toy line!
CB Cebulski: Many of the Marvel heroes and villains will be making appearances week after week, but like the name says, the anime will focus mainly on the Avengers. Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Wasp in particular. Spider-Man will play a big role as well.
Marvel.com: Each Marvel hero has their own partner in the game. How do they fit in to the storyline?
CB Cebulski: Yes, in the game and in the anime. The kids that partner with each hero are key to the overall story. I don't want to give too much away as the relationships between the Marvel heroes and their teen counterparts are established in our first arc, so let's just say they'll all come to share a strong bond that will grow over the course of the series.
CB Cebulski: The Marvel characters were redesigned with certain Japanese sensibilities by the talented artists at Bandai and Toei. We would sit in production meetings and our jaws would drop looking at some of the concepts we were presented. More than once we asked, "Can we use that design in our comics?!"
Marvel.com: What was your first experience like playing Disk Wars?
CB Cebulski: It was baffling. I'm not really a gamer; I don't play video games, board games or role-playing games, I'm sorry to say. It took me a while to get the hang of it, to be honest. But in focus groups, the kids would come in and pick up the Disk Wars disks and get right into it. It was amazing to watch!
Marvel.com: When can Japanese fans expect to see the series on television?
CB Cebulski: The TV series launches April 2 in Japan and will air weekly on TV Tokyo. We may even be able to give you a little sneak peek at the trailer soon!
Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers
Marvel.com: You saw these debut at a convention, correct? What was the fan reaction like to this?
CB Cebulski: Yeah, at the Jisedai (Next Generation) World Hobby Fair in Tokyo in January! It was pretty incredible. I grew up reading Marvel and to be at a con in Japan 30 years later watching kids there get so excited about the Marvel characters just like I did at that age, it really blew my mind.
Marvel.com: And finally, why will Marvel fans love this game?
CB Cebulski: Marvel has such a long history of bringing our fans different interpretations of the characters we all know and love. Disk Wars offers such an original take on our heroes and villains, one that's unique, action-packed and like nothing anyone has ever seen before!
