The guys behind the scenes knew telling Thor’s story wasn’t going to be easy. It involves decades worth of comics material, thousands of years of mythology, and it all had to be compressed into two hours or less.

“It was very, very challenging,” director Kenneth Branagh admitted to reporters. “But that was part of the attraction.”

Added Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, “We haven’t done a character from another world yet, and we wanted to introduce a story that starts on present-day Earth, and would basically throw the viewer into these other worlds so we have an idea of where Thor is from and why.”

Telling that story put a huge burden on the writers. But the screenplay team--Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, and Don Payne--had a plan of attack.

“First you figure out what the [story’s] structure is, and, more importantly, you figure out who the human being is,” said Miller. “It’s a rule you apply to any writing effort: Find the person in the middle of the story, figure out what their story is, and tell it.”

Chris Hemsworth stars in "Thor"

Branagh’s critically acclaimed background as a Shakespearean actor in both theater and film left no doubt he’d uncover the humanity from the story. That meant finding a lead that wasn’t just a big body that carried a hammer.

“We realized Thor wouldn’t only rely on brawn, but would need some sort of acting brains, and some emotion, and some fun,” Branagh said. “We became pretty ambitious with what was clearly going to be a character journey; somebody who changed from the movie’s beginning to its end.”

Enter Chris Hemsworth. Although it wasn’t always certain the towering Australian would win the part, in the end, his efforts and enthusiasm for the role could not be overlooked.

“[Chris] did a lot for the part,” Branagh said. “He did workshops and read with actors and actresses, and then he nailed it when retelling some story of a great battle. And the mixture of arrogance and charm…that nailed it.”

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the epic adventure "Thor" spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

"Thor" is from a screenplay by Ashley Edward Miller & Zack Stentz and Don Payne and a story by J. Michael Straczynski and Mark Protosevich. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige will produce the film. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Marvel Studio’s Co-President, Louis D'Esposito, will executive produce.

In addition to "Thor," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Captain America: The First Avenger" on July 22, 2011; "Marvel's The Avengers" on May 4, 2012; and "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013.
