So you’re excited about the upcoming “Captain America: The First Avenger” feature film and want to look into the character’s rich history? No problem! For 70 years, Captain America’s been thrilling readers with pulse-pounding stories of patriotism and panache, and he’s showing no sign of slowing down anytime soon--in fact, Cap’s got a new #1 heading your way just in time for his big screen debut.

So settle in with your favorite shield, True Believer, and peruse these exciting starting points for America’s greatest hero!

Captain America Comics #1

This legendary comic introduced a shield-wielding, star-spangled crusader to the world--and comic books would never be the same. This one’s got it all: Steve Rogers’s origin as Captain America, Bucky, the Red Skull and enough adventure to fill a year’s worth of issues, all in the wild Golden Age tradition!

You can read this history-making comic in MARVEL MASTERWORKS: GOLDEN AGE CAPTAIN AMERICA VOL. 1, but beware the Red Skull!

Tales of Suspense #59

Service above and beyond the call of duty deserves a reward! After being re-introduced to comicdom in AVENGERS Vol. 1 #4, Captain America found himself starring in his very own series again. Alas, he had to deal with an attack by a cadre of armored creeps at his new digs in Avengers Mansion, but no one said the life of a super hero came easy!

Captain America Vol. 5 #1

We leap all the way into the new millennium for the beginning of Cap’s modern-day success story, all under the creative control of writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting. This series exploded with a bang from the first issue, detailing the latest death of the Red Skull and setting up the eventual return of Cap’s World War II partner, Bucky. The Sentinel of Liberty never had it so good.

You know you want it. Here’s where you get it: The CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER ULTIMATE COLLECTION. What else do you need to know? Go! Now! Get!

Captain America Vol. 6 #1

What? A new #1? Yes, we told you so! After an incredible run with Bucky, the former Winter Soldier, as Captain America, Ed Brubaker returns Steve Rogers to the role and costume that cemented him as one of the greatest heroes ever in the minds and hearts of super hero fans everywhere. Another history-making moment from Ed Brubaker and artist Steve McNiven!

You need only wait until July 13 to get this book in your hot little mitts! Pick up one for a friend while you’re at it--they’ll thank you!

Ultimates #1

Yes, Virginia, there is an Ultimate Captain America. Pretty much the Cap you all know and love, but with that Ultimate twist of flavor that makes the Ultimate Universe a unique and fascinating place to visit. This Cap had a lot to deal with after being thawed out, but proved his mettle in a pitched battle with the Hulk and in holding his team together in the face of division and derision.

Look for this issue in the spiffy ULTIMATES ULTIMATE COLLECTION.

"Captain America: The First Avenger" will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.  As Captain America, Rogers joins forces with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).

Check out the official "Captain America: The First Avenger" teaser site as well as its hub page right here on Marvel.com for the latest on Cap's big screen adventure hitting theaters July 22!

In addition to "Captain America: The First Avenger," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Marvel's The Avengers" on May 4, 2012, and "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013.
