Well before the filming started for “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Diamond Select Toys’ Director Chuck Terceira and Gentle Giant Studios were approached about creating figures for the movie. But that didn’t make the process easier for these two expert toy making companies.

“It's all about the reference. Due to manufacturing timelines, we're frequently starting on the toys before they've even begun filming, so we're working off of preproduction photos or sometimes even concept artwork,” said a spokesman from Gentle Giant Studios.

“We always do our best to track down as much high-resolution reference as we can, so that we can really pack as much detail into the toys as possible. We're as big of fans of the property as anyone else, so we really want to capture everything that we can.”

And capture it they did. The Marvel Select First Avenger Captain America figure has quite a bit of awesome detail in the shield and especially in the outfit. Gentle Giants Studios was excited to see the outfit for the Star-Spangled Avenger well before filming for the movie even started.

“When we first received the images, we were blown away by how cool and spot-on the costumes were. Sure, Cap's movie costume is quite different than it is in the comics, but it is certainly recognizable as Captain America, and it looks to have been influenced by the Ultimate World War II Captain America costume designed by Bryan Hitch.”

These inspiring figures each have a specific and unique design that gets down to every fold in Cap’s uniform and every bump on Red Skull’s face. So how exactly do they do it? It’s more than grabbing a hunk of plastic and chipping away at it--in fact, it’s all digital.

“When sculpting traditionally, if you receive feedback along the lines of ‘Make the head seven percent larger,’ that would be an entire resculpt. When sculpting digitally, resizing a part is simply a matter of punching in a few numbers.”

So digital sculpting saves time and effort in the creative process, leaving plenty of time for these craftsmen to focus on the story they wanted to tell with the figures.

“With the addition of the movie licenses to the Marvel Select brand, we've been trying to use the larger format to help tell the story of the movie. With Wolverine we included part of the alley from his fight with Gambit. With Thor and Loki we recreated part of the rainbow bridge control room,” recounts Chuck Terceira. “And for Captain America we included the device from the movie's climax. This, along with the distinctive costumes from the movie, make for a unique design.”
