Now that Marvel has complete control of it's comic book characters through Marvel Studios (instead of just licensing them to other studios for their use) why is director Jon Favreau being allowed to combine Whiplash (Tony Scarlotti an American) and the Crimson Dynamo (Ivan Vanko a Russian)? These are TWO SEPERATE CHARACTERS and would be better if they kept them that way. Not long ago we learned that Mickey Rourke is playing the character Whiplash with the alter ego name Ivan Vanko . I hope they don't do the same thing they did on Spiderman 3 and try to incorporate too many villians only to not do them justice on the big screen. I really liked Iron Man and look forward to seeing this one next year, but please Marvel do the right thing for the fans of the comic books do it right - especially now since you have carte blanche. :grider:

All the Iron Man franchise has to do is not paint itself into a corner. It, like Dark Knight, seems to want to ground itself in realism, which is cool and all, but it presents some problems: elimination of characters that do not fit the image. That's what made Mandarin a barely referenced nod rather than a full out super powered main adversary. They may be being strategic though, holding off adapting someone like Mandarin for full-glory adaptation to the big screen, that is. Thinking about how they will have to eventually mesh the realistic worlds of Iron Man (so far) and Captain America (I'm assuming, and likely) with the gamma mutate science of Hulk and the mythical aspect of Thor to make the Avengers even possible, I can see Iron Man dipping into more fantasy by IM III. I wouldn't presume to know what they'd have down the road, but one possible way to venture into less strict realism to allow IM to sync with someone like Thor (besides treating it all like the Ultimates when there was enough doubt and supporting story to have Thor's abilities solely tech based and Asgard an aspect of an unbalanced mind), is to make the Mandarin's abilities partially a thing of rigged environments. The ultra realism might make them hesitant to include the origin of the Mandarin's rings as extra-terrestrial, but they are at least technology based artifacts that seem almost magical in use. It'd be hard to sell intense flames, ice-waves and teleportation as originating from a ring on a finger, but having pre-rigged effects triggered and aimed by the rings is entirely possible. If they do wish to venture past the 'explainable' they can though, because Nick already made his comment about there being others out there, and that allows the story an excuse to not need everything to be based on believable tech. That being said, Whiplash enough of a departure from the Iron Monger for IM not to fall into a problem of repetition. I find talk of blending him with Crimson Dynamo as unnecessary though, even if they will beef up his look with an armor based outer shell a bit, keeping the focus on the tech-whips allows for IM3 to have a slew of armored baddies possible, and aerial combat would be enough to differentiate the feel of the movie from what having an armored adversary like Monger was, since he was more grounded and the imposing type... especially with IM2 already altering the dynamic with WL and Black Widow.

It's great that we get to look forward to an IM3 but Marvel shouldn't get ahead of themselves. If this movie really flops, the general public may not want another, but if they make the focus on spying (with Spymaster, Ghost, and Black Widow, for some sex appeal), this movie could be great.

Iron Man 1 was great. I enjoyed the story line and the characters very much. I just hope that Iron Man 2 will be a good as the first. Cause if U ask me Mickey Rouke does not suit the bill. Now the Mandarin villian will be a perfect touch to any Iron Man movie.

Um, I'm not a big Iron Man fan, (the Civil War really burst my bubble) but going on with armored people will get old VERY quickly. Just saying, you need to bring someone else. Like that one dude wit hthe ten rings or something like that. Or, to make every ones life more interesting, combine all the marvel heroes. Now that would be something to see! Oh, and in Iron Man 2, PLEASE (i beg you) do NOT use the GD word!!! I already can't see WOlverine Origins because of that. Thankyou. :rogue:

Ok, from what I have read on marvel.com about Whiplash...is a complete wuss. They either need to beef up his profile to make him seem at least somewhat interesting or I am going to roll my eyes at just a remake of the first Ironman. COme on let him fight something completely different or it's going to become like the Superman movies and lame Lex Luthor, but no this time it is Hex Huthor a completely different arrogant rich bad guy...nothing like the first 10 movies and tv series.

i dunno wat 2 say 2 this as whiplash is a cool baddie but not as well known out of the marvel universe but it payed off with iron monger so i am excited.i also heard that black widow and nick fury are in it which is good but alos a rumour that hawkeye is in it with black widow don't know if thats true but if he is :hawkeye: it'll be great.i also like to add that i agree with people on the mandarin proposal and i think it would make a movie   :carnage: :apoc:

This villan looks good by the way i can't wait to see mandarin but i hope not all of his enemies are armored baddies maybe they can introduce spymaster.

I hope they don't fall into the same trap as the 90s Batman movies and the Spiderman franchise................too many villians. I would like to see Stark go head to head with the Mandarin. I think if done right, he would be an awesome villian on the big screen. I'm a fan of Rourke, but he just doesn't look like a threat to Iron Man in these photos. Oh well, we will see.

that is the craziest most distracting costume of all time how is that cool at all it just looks like a drunk mickey rourke coming out of a scrap metal plant after 2 days

Am i the only one that noticed the mini arc reactor in the center of whiplash's harness? It looks exactly like starks from IM1. Givin that Whiplash started as a Maggia enforcer, this will most likely be a industrial espionage situation. Probably the Maggia stealing Stark tech and starting to outfit their super crooks with it.

BlackSamurai

Can't say they won't armor him up, but Whiplash does have tech behind his coils regardless and this looks like he's in some sort of extreme sports setting prior to being employed against Stark. At the least he'll get a costume pulled over that harness that is just getting showcased to an audience in that pic (directly or indirectly)

I'm not so much into Iron Man comics, so I actually don't know what would be a smart thing to do with the movie franchise, but since this is a series of movies, I have to say that those guys just should be looking where they are going to with it, which I don't really think they are doing. I mean, this is a very sensitive franchise they are dealing with, franchise that combines hi-tech with realism and fantasy at the same time. And, as we all know it, there are some things that work just fantastic in the comic book, but that doesn't mean the same thing's with film. Film is a form of art which differs so much from comic books because it is realistic. Comics aren't, they just try to be intuitive. The point is, I'm not so sure how this Whiplash thing is going to work in terms of realism and will it be convincing enough, 'cause the screenshot Marvel just published doesn't look so good.

[quote@smunzimus I don't mind the 9idea of it being Shellhead vs a bunch of opponents who individually aren't his match, but combined may cause some problems. If the Widow is in it then we know there is going to be some spying on the weapons being developed by Hammer and Stark. Maybe it will just be a bunch of Hammer stuffs vs Starks suit. Who am I kidding. SO long as it isn't one big gad guy in a suit (ala the first outing) I'll be happy.
It would be nice. The first Iron Man comic book i bought was Iron Man volume III #1 (published 2003 in Norway), with the Death Squad:http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/dthsq4.htmThey were five well-armed and well-trained mercenaries, and had the upper hand for a while, disabled Iron Man's rocket boots, blinded his visual sensors and escaped relatively unharmed after Iron Man knocked out one of them. The issue gave me a good first impression of Iron Man, and a brilliant summary of his origin story.

I think the armour makes sense in that Justin Hammer, just like in the comics, is going to take over weapons manufacturing and is gonna be able to equip guys like whiplash with new tech weapons. I was hoping to see more of the 10 rings guys and mandarin but that must be iron man 3 :P

Part of the greatness of the cmx Iron Man is him taking technology against his magical equivalent (Mandarin)...I like the Whiplash look and all, but it does look really dinky compared to Iron Man's suit(s). It's almost like they're giving Iron Man some dummie fights to make his record look good while avoiding the big guys that beat Iron Man up, but made him look better once they were down. I will have to see if they're able to make this plot as entertaining as the first run. IM1 was a terrific origin plot and I was hoping they would use that as a springboard toward epic battles. Not just more whackos with advanced kiddy toys.

This movie is going to be awesome! I think the amalgamation of different villains ex.: Crimson Dynamo/Whiplash, is an interesting mix and will be in the case of IM2, esp. with Rourke as the character. That formula doesn't always work for Marvel movies, in the case of whatever the hell Deadpool was in XO:Wolverine, but I'm looking forward to it to see the results. The movie comes out nxt year and I'm already psyched!

Iron Man was an apsolutly flawless film. I think that the aproach of using Justin Hammer, Whiplash/Crimson Dynamo and The Black Widow will be entertaining and well done. PS: Concidering that the Mandarin will undouptably be in IM3, not all of the villains will be armoured.

Not thrilled that they are going with the armored nemesis route, like the Armored Adventures series. It's really not that cool if all Iron Man's enemies are also armored.

I'm guessing if the movie Whiplash is actually a composite of Whiplash and the Crimson Dynamo then he'll get a full suit at some point. Although seeing Rourke like that trashing Iron Man would be pretty cool.
