Even the Mighty Thor can be thunderstruck by affairs of the heart!

Marvel Studios announced today that Academy Award® nominated actress Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the studio's highly anticipated movie "Thor."

In the early "Thor" comics, Jane Foster was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation.

Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce "Thor." Principal photography for the film is set for early 2010. The film will be released in the US on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of super hero: "Thor." This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Portman will next be seen starring in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire. She recently wrapped production on "Hesher," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and executive produced by her production company handsomecharlie films, and Don Roos' "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits," which also she executive produced. In 2004, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress as well as an Academy Award nomination in the same category for "Closer." She also earned critical acclaim for her role in "Garden State" and is most well known for her role as Queen Padme Amidala in the "Star Wars" Trilogy. Other film credits include "The Other Boleyn Girl," "V for Vendetta," "Cold Mountain," "Anywhere But Here," "Heat," "Beautiful Girls" and "The Professional."

"Thor" is one of a continuing slate of films being produced by Marvel Studios based on the Marvel characters, including "Iron Man 2" on May 7, 2010, "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011, and "The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

[quote:345d95e5ab="Lord Nerevar"]Why does she look so much like Keira Knightley in this photo? It doesn't look like Portman at all. Did Marvel just pull some random photo off the Net and say it's her? Or were they provided this pic from a rep? Because that looks a LOT like Knightley.**EDIT** Nevermind, I compared the mole on the cheek, guess it's her. Wow, she could be Keira's twin in that pic.
Why does there always have to be someone who cannot keep their mouth closed. If you cannot say something decent keep your yap trap closed (from Mr. Warlock ) :apoc:

[quote:0b7be6e117="Iron Sait"]nooooo. shes an awful choice. look at her! shes so vacant! there's nothing there! i understand i probably in the minority concerning this, but i cant be the only one who thinks this, surely? she'll be worse than kate bosworth in superman, mark my words...
Im not sure I know what you mean by "Vacant". If you mean her acting abilities, then you need to watch how different she is in Star Wars, V for Vendetta, and The Other Boleyn Girl. Her FULL range is VERY well showcased with these three films, or watch "Leon" (Aka The Professional) Which she was in at age 11!!!If you mean she's unintelligent or ditzy... She has a degree from Harvard... Yeah, lol... HARVARD, as in Harvard Law...(Also, I highly suggest everyone check out the "Natalie Portman Rap" By The Lonely Island on youtube.. It shows that she has a VERY good sense of humor and doesn't take herself too seriously like a lot of other actors/actresses.)To be honest, I'm stoked about her, and just hope that she shows up as a supporting role, along with Pepper Potts in The Avengers so that it brings A LOT of Mainstream movie goers for the star power: Robert Downey Jr, Edward Norton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Don Cheadle... Talk about an all-star cast... And those are just the ones we know about!!!

[quote@Ironhelix Is it just me, but Asgard is actually supposed to be spelled Asgaard, being Norse and all. Just sayin.
Both are correct, but "double-A" is just an alternate spelling; Asgard is way more common. "Being Norse and all" has nothing to do with that.

Knightley was Portman's stand-in as Amidala in Star Wars (she was the "Queen" when Portman-Padme accompanied the Jedi as "servant girl"...) and even Knightley's mother said she couldn't tell them apart in make-up!

[quote@harlequin7 she really doesnt look that much like keira Knightly. She has similar coloured hair and is beautiful. Some superficial similarities compounded buy the fact that this is a standard head shot which all actors and actresses do. As far as I was aware this movie was always going to feature Donald Blake because the story has been that Thor gets sent to live on earth, for as long as there have been official posts about the story. It would be foolish of Marvel not to include a human element otherwise it stops being a superhero story and becomes a fantasy LOTR type film (in the eyes of the general public).
"He (Kevin Feige) also did say that Thor takes place on both modern Earth and other worlds like Asgard, confirming what we heard the other day about Donald Blake not being a part of the story and the setting be primarily Earth."http://www.firstshowing.net/2009/06/07/profile-on-marvel-studios-with-big-updates-from-kevin-feige/Portman will be the human anchor and perspective to the story, much as she was it in V for Vendetta

Just to let things clear: Keira Knightley looks like Natalie Portman. She is an excellent choice. It's funny how I read about this right after watching the short film "Hotel Chevalier". There are no coincidences. But still...

Its nice to know that she will be the girl in thor, but chris hemmeth?? as thor?? come on people look at him..he is small and scrawny! now look at thor..thor is big and muscular! put two and two together. the only reason that they are using this loser is because of his face! Thor is more than a pretty face, thor is muscle and might...and MAN!! They are better off using Triple H if you want my opiniom! Come on Just compare the two...thor uses a hammer, triple h uses a hammer, thor has LONG golden hair, triple h has long golden hair, thor is muscular, triple h is muscular...come on people think!! Chris hemmeth is to small and to pretty for the role, let a real man be in the movie! :magneto:

When you factor in Iron Man and Incredable Hulk (the only movies Marvel has created independantly so far) one would imagine that Tor would be at least good, if not great. I just hope it's not like Wolverine, that sucked.

I have to say, the news about the new Thor movie collide....on one hand, we hear it will be 100% Asgard and without Donald Blake... now we hear this about Jane FosterI guess Blake will be in it after all...?
