For Asgard, True Believers!

Marvel Studios has commenced principal photography on the highly anticipated feature film "Thor" directed by Kenneth Branagh.

In "Thor," Chris Hemsworth portrays the title character with Tom Hiddleston in the role of Thor’s brother Loki, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.  Additionally, the studio has cast Academy Award® winning actor Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Renee Russo as Frigga, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Josh Dallas as Fandral, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Idris Elba as Heimdall, as well as Colm Feore, Kat Dennings and award-winning actor Stellan Skarsgård.  The film is slated for release in theatres domestically on May 6, 2011 via Paramount Pictures which will also release the film on a worldwide basis.

The epic adventure "Thor" spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard.  At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war.  Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment.  Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

"Thor" is from a screenplay by Ashley Edward Miller & Zack Stentz and Don Payne and a story by J. Michael Straczynski and Mark Protosevich.  Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige will produce the film.  Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, and Marvel Studio’s Co-President, Louis D'Esposito, will executive produce.

In addition to "Thor," Marvel Studios is also scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 2" on May 7, 2010, "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011, and "The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

This is not the Norwegian Pantheon or Norse Mythology. Heimdall maybe described as Whitest of the Gods, but I had never seen a GOD, have you!? We can commit on this til the cows come home and no one would be the wiser. Now Heidall is now the Blackest of the Gods. DEAL WITH IT AND ENJOY THE MOVIE, PEACE

Let's keep in mind that when X-men first came out, people were sketchy about Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine, and he pulled it off. I think Chris Hemsworth can pull it off. Also look at Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia, that dude bulked up a lot.

oh and on another note, please find better reasons to cry than about secondary characters that will probably only seen once in a movie.Nick Fury is black now...is that insulting to you?Idris Alba is British so the implied insults about his speech is rediculous as far as what we all know you are implying

1: it's a movie2: it's some director/producer's/movie studio's interpretation of the comic3: WTF white actors play non whites ALL the time to this day; they play native Americans, Blacks, Asians, whatever they please.4: f*ck you and your Scandinavian ancencestry if you're basing it off of Marvel Comics

Let's keep something in mind here....They're making a THOR movie....they're actually making a THOR movie. I remember the days when a Spidey or X-Men movie was a far distant dream. So I wouldn't give a flip if they cast a martian as Heimdall. I'm just giddy they're making a THOR movie. Maybe I'll be jaded in 20 years, but I really doubt it.

[quote@Areophile Heimdall is described, in Norse mythology, as the "Whitest of the Gods" - is this supposed to be some sort of insult to Scandinavians to cast a black man as Heimdall?
Maybe he was soooooooooooo white, he was black !!Maybe the Norse never saw a blackman before so that was the only way they could describe him...as beign whiter than white !!Hey...i am just trying to help them out with the reasoning here. Maybe he will wear the current costume where the helmet covers his face so much u can barely see anything except his eyes and the armor will cover his whole body, so it is never really shown that he is a black man.

[quote@sgtyarbs . At least Skarsgård won't have to fake an accent.
Umm...and you know what an Asgardian accent sounds like somehow?

It is going to be awesome to see THOR GOD of THUNDER, (Chris Hemsworth )go up against IRON MAN, (Robert Downy Jr. ) ...or Team up With..! Now, will it be up to date to keep up with Tony Starks decision to unreveal his identity..? Will Dr. Doom, (Julias McMahon ) play a part as well?.. Im asking ..maybe along Some FANTASTIC few..? How much tie up are we talking here? I can see it go as far as DeathLok and back to Captin America..or even Black Panter.. that would be fun.. Rounding up the Avengers is the task at hand for Marvel Studios I beleive.

elba's a good actor and all and i'm not terribly upset as i've been in the past with a number of other politically correct, trying-to-ensure-you-suck-in-as-much-money-as-possible-by-ensuring-casting-diversity moves like this that hollywood has made. still, i do think it's ridiculous to have a black norse god. if someone were to make a movie about chinese mythology it would be an insult to asian peoples as well as black folks to have a black god portrayed within that pantheon. if it doesn't fit, leave it out.as a rule, don't get will smith to play james west, and don't get a white dude to be shaft. as marvel fans we want our wakandan god(s) and peoples black and our asgardians white, simply bc that's how it's always been in the comics. (please no comments about the panther god being more 'panther' than black, just roll with it.)fans would throw up if t'challa was played by ben affleck or superman by chiwetel ejiofor. stay true to the story. if you need to be that politically correct then throw some diversity into the midgard part of the story--afterall our country's pretty diverse.

I like the outside-the-box castings personally. Some really interesting choices. Curious whether they're going to put Stevenson in a body-suit or alter Volstagg to suit him. Hope it's the former and not the latter.

Who's to say that there were no black gods, just like a lot of things in history maybe the black gods were never mentioned.Black people are all over the earth, so why wouldn't they be gods as well?Anyway this movie has to be epic, big, full of scope, and action packed. This should be the most awesome movie that Marvel has ever made!

[quote@Areophile Is there any way to not seem racist while saying that there WERE NO BLACK GODS in the Norwegian pantheon?
Lol, I remember how to see afro-american Nick Fury in Iron Man 2 trailer. Someone should stop this.

There was already a huge debate over that topic in another thread Areophile. I think the reasoning behind it is just to expand the appeal of the film and characters to wider audiences since Hollywood obviously doesn't care about the fanboys or the story of the books and are just trying to cash in on the biggest new "thing.

Heimdall is described, in Norse mythology, as the "Whitest of the Gods" - is this supposed to be some sort of insult to Scandinavians to cast a black man as Heimdall? These characters, though popularized in comic fiction, were (and still are) worshiped for thousands of years. To simply "add in" some black folks in order to be politically correct is shameful. It reminds me of Robin Hood's Moor sidekick in the vapid Kevin Costner adaptation. Is there any way to not seem racist while saying that there WERE NO BLACK GODS in the Norwegian pantheon?

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS SO GRAND!!!!!!!!!! Now I understand why the movie got pushed back to 2011. Howbeit I'm not at all satisfied with the current Marvel line up for this year. I'm in no way excited about Iron Man 2 or that terrible Black Panther cartoon. I'm sure going to follow and keep up with Marvel Super Hero Squad as it looks quite interesting. On the other hand over on the Thor section of Marvel.com I noticed a article on a new 2010 Thor cartoon or rather animated TV series. If the animation and tone is anything like the Hulk vs Thor movie I'll watch this program just as faithfully as I watch Ben10 and the BBC's Robin Hood with Jonas Armstrong! I sure hope that both the animated Thor TV show and movie will bear the same mythical setting, tone and aura as that of the classic Dungeons and Dragons (used to air on Jetix in recent years which is now Disney XD) cartoon and the League of Legends game and Narnia Prince Capsian movie carry.

Eagerly awaiting Thor period! I really hope they go with making it look and feel epic, as the one Avenger in the movie mash-up that is old-world and mythic based they should get that done before they have to tone his associations down to fit in a real-world, technology based team.

Let's not start that arguement again. I'm just glad they got a good actor to play the part of Heimdall. Hopefully the story is a good one and we don't end up with an Origins-type movie. Can't wait to see some pics of the actors in costume.

Idris Elba as Heimdall has got to be the most ridiculous casting choice I've ever seen. Otherwise, the cast is stunning.
