Chris Hemsworth as Thor

Principal photography on next year's "Thor" movie recently began and we're now proud to show the first official photo of star Chris Hemsworth on set as the mighty Thor!

In "Thor," Chris Hemsworth portrays the title character with Tom Hiddleston in the role of Thor’s brother Loki, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.  Additionally, the studio has cast Academy Award® winning actor Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Renee Russo as Frigga, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Josh Dallas as Fandral, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Idris Elba as Heimdall, as well as Colm Feore, Kat Dennings and award-winning actor Stellan Skarsgård.  The film is slated for release in theatres domestically on May 6, 2011 via Paramount Pictures which will also release the film on a worldwide basis.

The epic adventure "Thor" spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard.  At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war.  Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment.  Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

"Thor" is from a screenplay by Ashley Edward Miller & Zack Stentz and Don Payne and a story by J. Michael Straczynski and Mark Protosevich.  Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige will produce the film.  Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, and Marvel Studio’s Co-President, Louis D'Esposito, will executive produce.

In addition to "Thor," Marvel Studios is also scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 2" on May 7, 2010, "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011, and "Marvel Studios' The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

I think and hope this movie will be good because first the actor is good and second Marvel is working hard on it.

i agree i don't mind a couple of changes when it comes to the super heros. even if they don't sync up with the comics they are still good and me personally think that most marvel movies are great. so i keep an open mind about the movies and enjoy them to. i mean a couple of films i didn't agree with myself but hey a few comics have been the same way, thats the way art and creativity goes you experiment with new and fresh ideas.

I really hope this movie will be epic cause I been hearing people talk bad about this movie and they have never look at a comic before they just think it's dumb cause he is a god and he doesn't need to be fighting with Iron Man so this movie better be good or noncomic book readers will just talk bad about this movie like they did in F4 films and SPIDER-Man 3 movie and will just give them reason to talk bad about coic books.

To those here who complain that the Marvel movies don't get it right because they depart from the comic story lines - the fact is that over the 70 years of Marvel many, many changes have been made to the look of characters, their origins have been retconned, and 'what if?' stories abound. The Ultimates Marvel characters are different from the regular Marvel universe characters, and every artist/writer team brings a new take to old characters. The movies just do the same thing. It's all part of the creativity of the art form. These are not real people; they are fictional characters. A certain amount of creative freedom should be allowed. This is why it doesn't bother me too much that Rhodey in Iron Man 1 is a different character from Rhodey in Iron Man 2. Artists draw the same characters differently anyway so you just suspend disbelief and go with it. So the Fantastic Four films were not as great at the Spider-Man films. Well, isn't that true when you read comics too? Some are better than others. I for one am very grateful that Marvel characters are finally being transferred to the silver screen in ways that have never been done before, at an unprecedented level of quality. This is truly the Marvel Age of Cinema, and it has only just begun! Excelsior!

I really hope the concept art that was leaked recently isn't official. The thought of Thor wearing matrix pants and space boots just doesn't cut it

@Captainamer2 most bodybuilders can't act take Arnold Swartzwenger and Dolph Ludgren they were the best actors/bodybuilders. So rather have someone who can act in a block buster movie. @badazzfelicano i disagree I rather they make the movies an alternate version of what happen in thecomics with surprises for comic readers like X-men:Last Stand where the death of prof. X and Cyclops made the movie more unpredictable.

i love all the marvel movies so far expect punisher (HE AIN'T RUTHLESS AT ALL) and Xmen, which sucks 'cause huuuuuge x men fan, y'all should just go by comic story, for real, ppl will love it. and i like hugh jackman but he isn't good wolverine at all. but marvel y'all great, keep doing what ya doing, nuff said

I thought superheros were supposed to have muscles? Isn't Thor supposed to be fairly well muscled? Where's the muscle? Doesn't look like Cap is going to have any muscle either. In the day of numerous outrageously large bodybuilders around the world, why can't we get some of these guys to play superheros and super villans?

I agree the Marvel movies have been very dissapointing , with the exception of the first spidey movie that was passable and recognizable as was the second Hulk movie (i'm pretending the first one does not exist) I have pretty much given up on comic book movies they change so much of the characters and what made these guys great, once marvel & DC started with the alternate versions ala Ultimates that was the beginning of the end. How about letting someone like Jim Starlin write a story for a flick and having marvel putting their foot down and getting a backbone and follow through on being loyal to the characters which many of us grew up reading about. Instead of being mostly concerned about Stans cameo appearances. I have not seen much info on the Thor movie however if the earlier Marvel movies are any indication I won't hold my breathe for a nice suprise. Now i hear the guy who plays Johnny storm in the Ultimates version of The ff films is going to play Cap talk about major let down, I mean the guy plays storm ok but Cap damn talk about no respect for the character and yet another insult for the purist marvel fans out here. I swear I think I've stepped into an alternate universe and totally stepped in poop! Excelsior (not)

I am a huge Marvel fan and have been for 25 years. So many of these comic book movies that have come out have been such disappointments because of one major flaw. They don't stick to the story line. These comics have been around for DECADES, and it's largely due to the great stories that are in these comic books. If you are going to do a movie based on characters of such solid background as is found in Marvel Comics then I suggest that you stick to what is already written. Not what you THINKthe story should be about. You writers and directors piss people off when you don't tell the story as it was and put your own spin on things.NEWS FLASH... if these tales were not any good...THEN THEY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR THESE 40 PLUS YEARS. DO IT RIGHT FOR ONCE

I really hope they do a good job of this as they have done with Iron man 1 & 2, and Drak knight I will be shattered if they stuff it up. But I am very excited they are making Thor. Dear Marvel make us proud as you have done with Iron man and the incredible Hulk.

Awsome costume. Looks like they're going with the current look from the comics. I was hoping he would transition from the classic to the current one, though.

Dear MarvelAs you know Daredevil, Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer gave some-what of a bad name too Marvel Movies. But with Iron Man 1 and 2 and The Incredible Hulk got your kudos back. Now that you are going to make Thor, you have such an advantage to make a movie like the Dark Knight. Thor is a movie with the ability too add drama and intense writing, unlike most other comic book movies, and seems to be a movie much easier to play around with than your others. This type of story could even give you an Oscar because you can make it similar too a Robin Hood (with Russel Crowe) like movie. If you can make this movie into a deep dramatic movie not centered around action, I guarantee an Oscar coming your way. Good Luck and I look forward too seeing all of your movies. :)

Dear Marvel Thank you for creating Marvel Studios and taking back full creative rights to making Marvel Movies. I have been a true believer since the comics where 20 cents...thats right 20 cents!!! But all my long life I have been waiting for these movies that have been made, and I make sure my children and I go to every opening. Thor looks to be your best foots forward, in my opinion. Just from the photo of Thor in costume, im feeling that rendition of Thor's outfit. From the metal sleeves to that cape...WHAT IS THAT VELVET!!! Hats off to the casting of this movie. (big imphasis on THIS MOVIE) I cant wait to see them as their counter parts. Thanks Marvel for giving us your universe.

Dear MarvelThankyou.. this seems like such a perfect choice for the almighty Thor...i can wait to see what will happen with this movie... dont forget Thor helmet. and if i may add, every time Thor enters can you please add the dramatic god like backround music it will bring so much energy to him... it will be incredible... and can you also add beta ray bill.. like in the back round or some thing that would be awesome...I really dont get why disney has to own every thing.. next thing you know they are going to start owning humans... having chips for identity.. okay

Actually, Iron Man was the first movie created by Marvel Studios. The Incredible Hulk was the second, and now that Disney has purchased Marvel you might consider it the "last." Hopefully Disney sees how well Marvel does and doesn't interfere.

@mayhemwolf That'd probably explain why the most recent Hulk movie is their best movie to date, they need to keep themselves involved in the making of these flicks, I am a fan of other ones but Hulk imo is arguably the best one theyve made hands down, Norton was dope the Hulk looked quality, whole movie looked awesome and the story was on point. They mos def need to bring Norton back for the avengers and for a sequel

Well Marvels involvment in their movies was not until the release of the Incredible Hulk, before then they were just asked for the rights to the material. Which is why they came out with their own studio. With the exception of the x-men series they are planning many reboots for the movies done under other studios to give em justice.

I think its good that they mix the original and ultimate look in all the movies they present, because it reaches out to fans of all ages. He looks awsome and I know the movie is gonna blow us all away... can't wait!

I'm stoked...Previous to the first X-Men movie, marvel had problems making a decent movie. (peep the original captain America movie as proof). This led me to cringe everytime Marvel announced a new movie. But with a few exceptions and geekery pin pricking, they have not let me down. It is with that, that I must declare, In Marvel I trust. I may have a few questions and wonders about Thor. Cap and Avengers movies...but In Marvel I trust.

Wile.E.Scientist

would of prefered a more traditional look, I loved Thor's portrayal in the 2 animated avengers movies, "ultimate & black panther" hope they stick to that kind of portrayal of him in the movie, so far i've got great reservations for this flick hopefully they wont disappoint I love Thor

Do some CG'ing on that costume because as of now it looks like a rubber suit and as a long time and EXTREMELY passionate Thor fan, that does not make me happy....

so thor, so official. they might do some cg on his costume like they did in ironman, cause the untonched armor looks like plastic a little before the cg. now we need to see the helmet and hammer. :thor:
