Thor, Odin and Loki in the "Thor" film

Behold: The lords of Asgard!

We brought you the first image of Thor, and now we present you with the first official photo of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in the halls of Asgard! With less than a year until the "Thor" film hits theaters on May 6, 2011--and a week until San Diego Comic-Con--this epic photo is just the tip of the cosmic iceberg!

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the epic adventure "Thor" spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard.  At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war.  Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment.  Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

"Thor" is from a screenplay by Ashley Edward Miller & Zack Stentz and Don Payne and a story by J. Michael Straczynski and Mark Protosevich.  Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige will produce the film.  Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, and Marvel Studio’s Co-President, Louis D'Esposito, will executive produce.

In addition to "Thor," Marvel Studios is also scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Captain America: The First Avenger" on July 22, 2011 and "Marvel Studios' The Avengers" on May 4, 2012. See "Iron Man 2" in theaters now.

Ya know what, the look of the armor after seeing the shot of Odin and Thor recently and the throne room pic. is giving me a bit more hope. I'll hold my skepticism til I see more as it develops. they may actually pull it off after all. That eyepatch still looks kinda cheaply made to me though :P

Thanks Colossus, I'll have to check it out and see if it all comes together. I really hope so. I just caught an article saying that the first sneak peak of live trailer footage was shown but I missed it. I'm sure I'll catch it soon.

They may just pull this off. at first i was dissapointed with thors boots but the overall look of the armor is pretty sweet. cant wait!

I guess it's supposed to be a matte finish to the armor instead of a super shiny one.

The guy playing Thor is HOT! Definately seeing this even though I don't follow Thor at all. lol Plus I can't pass up a marvel movie no matter what it is! They almost never disappoint!

MzombieX: I don't think the finished product is going to look as plastic as the posed shots make it. There's a pic of Thor and Odin (that looks like a screen shot) in this week's issue of EW. The armor looks far more metallic, I'd say downright good. Could also be the darker light, making it look more ... serious, I guess?

well, I think the sci-fi look might make this movie appeal to others than just Thor fans, of you guys didn't realize, movies based solely on mythology have not exactly been huge sellers lately. I personally don't mind the polished armor, it serves what they want to do here, they are not really trying to capture the myths here, they are trying to capture the comics to a certain degree, but adjust things to new medium, and what they have done with Thor in comics needs quite a bit of adjustment to work on screen. they are trying to make the Asgardians out to be a super powered, long lived race, not mystic beings like the myths, not tied to the barbarian warriors that worshiped them. and I am perfectly fine with that. the only problem I have is with the gold eye patch, the rest looks pretty good.

Good call "Colossus498" I agree with the Kirby influence, as I had stated in another post. You can see it especially in the design of Odin's chest plate. I don't so much have an issue with that, more so with the way it was executed. Wouldn't you agree that Kirby would have wanted the fans to look at those designs and at least be tricked into believing Asgardian Armor wasn't made of plastic? I think the fans of Marvel and Jack Kirby deserve more. It looks like they took Kirby's vision and constructed it out of the left over cod piece props from Batman, and that's just unacceptable to many. "iceman825" mentions that they are clean in appearance and may get dirty in combat but it isn't so much rubbing some dust on these things that will save them, they need to be raw in construction. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong when the movie is released but "BY ODIN'S TIN FOIL EYEPATCH!!!" I'm not even sure the best lighting effects team can give this armor weight and substance.

Guys don't be so hasty by jumping into conclusions! Let's wait and see! This is just a very early picture of the "on production" phase!I admit it looks odd in comparison to what we classically have on mind for the Asgardians, but I think that Branagh is quite trustworthy for an at least adequate result!

well as a old marvel follower... what can i say... at least the costumes aint spandex! I'll go see Thor, cant be worse than ghost rider(...remake anyone?)

im not agreeing with most here, could things be better, of course they could, but come on. its thor, thor is an over the top kind of character, yeah it probably would have been better if they couldve done as traditional costumes as possible, but im happy with these costumes as long as they look a little dirtier when theyre fighting which im sure they will, this pic just looks like odins talkin to them in asgard, why shouldn't their armour be clean? as long as loki dons the horns sometime, im perfectly fine with everything ive seen so far. guys when they bring cap, thor, ironman, and whoever else is comin to the party together, it wont look exactly like a comic, some stuff in there just cant happen, i think they took the armour up a notch and it looks great. keep it up marvel.

Look I hardly ever comment to anything online, but this needs to be said, "Marvel has sold out since Disney arrived on the scene." They know that they got their $200 million dollar movie. I have a bad feeling that Marvel studios is going to start making cheesy, out of touch movies and sell out. Just like their franchises that were made by other production companies(Spider-man, Fantastic Four, Blade, Daredevil, Hulk)Speaking of Hulk, he has been raped and murdered by Hollywood for his entire existence till 2008. When a more independent Marvel studios, cough.. cough.. Edward Norton.. cough.. took charge and got the big green machine correct for once on screen. Now they go ahead and pull Norton for artistic reasons? Come on really? Norton is the artistic reason why I loved "The Incredible Hulk". Marvel Studios is taking the credible out of the Incredible Hulk, by replacing Norton. Now Marvel has sold out and they prove it with this picture for the Thor movie. These costumes are even more lame then the campy 90's Batman and Robin costumes. That eye patch and those costumes need a major overhaul. But just wait till you see the tragedy that will become of Captain America. Come on, really, Chris Evans was the best choice to play Cap? Then also add in Joe Johnston? I tried to watch Wolfman, to see what kind of director Joe was going to be for Cap. I fell asleep within 10 minutes of the movie, no lie. The point I am trying to make with this article is that we need to become more vocal toward Marvel and the direction they are going with their movies. Because I love Marvel, but they need to wake up and smell the fecal matter they are producing right now.I really hope my point comes across to those reading.

Marvel has sold out since Disney showed up. They know they got their $200 million dollar audience. These costumes are weak. They remind me of the really bad Batman costumes from the 90'S. But I know that this isn't going to be quite as tragic as Chris Evans role as Captain America. I have a bad feeling that marvel studios is going to sell out like all their franchise movies (Spider-man, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Blade) that were made by other production companies.

Odin looks like a freakin cyborg with that golden eye patch

thehulkster94

I like most of the look, but the gold eye patch makes things look slightly cheep, they should have gone with the more standard black eye patch, that would have looked better. I'm not loving the armor, but it isn't terrible, not enough for me to avoid the movie, at least, not yet.

Very disappointed in the costume design. Looks like robot armour, way to clean cut. I hope the plot and the whole movie in general make up for this. This photo as a promo, I would not pay to see this movie. I'll wait for the trailer to make a finally decision. Crossing my fingers, I love THOR !

MzombieX

THOR is one of my favorite Marvel characters and I was looking forward to seeing this movie. Unfortunately I have to agree with the appearance, for the armor so far, looking extremely cheap. Norse Gods in plastic and rubber? Granted there is a distinct "Jack Kirby" style to the overall look and I admire and respect Kirby's vision. Yet the creative team on this movie seems to have failed from what I can tell so far. Was there no way to convey the sense of weight and substance that forged metal and hide would have given to these characters? The word "grit" has been used in these posts and I 100% agree that is what this lacks.

Bigjoeram

I think they should use the same costume for the avengers. because it brings back originality.

My father thinks the thor movie is going to be incredibly awesome. They do not look like power ranger costumes, it take someone with very little knowlage to realize that they don't. Greatness is in the eye of the beholder.

Who approved the costume designs for Loki and Odin? Very sci-fi-ish. I guess we could have guessed that after seeing the Thor armor they went with though. I hold that Thor himself looks cool none the less. I want to see helmets though. Where's the helmets? On a positive note, if it fails, we have the reassurance that Marvel is big on reboots. If this one doesn't do it, maybe someone can hook Zack Snyder or Peter Jackson on the idea of a Thor movie.

Holy Plastic Batman! Is this a scene from a Power Rangers movie? Because the costumes look really fake.

colossalpikachu

This image has disappointed me, I wasn't keen on the first Thor pic that was released and this looks really bad. I agree with a previous poster that the armour should be more gritty and battle ready, this looks too shiny and fake although I guess it could just be because they are royalty so maybe the other cast will look more realistic. Oh, and the movie has been confirmed to be in 3D but that just makes me even more worried.

Chuck_Mendez
Chuck_Mendez

oh, c'mon! this Chris guy is too skiny and fragile to be Thor. I men, beign athletic is not enough to play the God of thunder, you got to be a heavyweight (not like Brock Lesnar, he is more like the Juggernaut). What's next? Zack Efron playn' Punisher? haha

Love this Pic!!!!! It tells a story just in itself. A father happy and proud of his two sons. But in the background resentment of both sons for one another. Very Cain and Able. If the movie itself is as good at storytelling this will be one of Marvels best.

GammaCosmic
GammaCosmic

The armor looks so fake..it looks like plastic..hopefully this movie is in 3D to cover this up. It should be more real and regal looking..with a hint of battle tested looking. Very disappointed in the look so far. But will throw my money away to go see this anyway.

Yes,I was hoping to see an Odin and a Loki pic early. I can't wait see what Ray Stevenson looks as Volstagg. And I truly hope that Thor is ten-times better than Green Lantern so D.C fans can suck it. Cause all I'm hearing is Dark Knight is a way better movie than Iron Man 2. And I hate that people are trying to compare the movies.

Windblast
Windblast

It sucks that nobody has their helmet, there's no Donald Blake, and I don't really know how I feel about Loki's look...but I'm still excited about the movie.

boscoe

I am not to crazy about the look of the movie. The armor should be grittier and more realistic, they are Norse Gods, barbaric warriors. Not fancy Elves from Lord of the Rings. However, I still have hope for a good movie. Look at the Green Goblin from the Spider-Man Movie. It cheep looking and unimpressive, however, William Dafoe was a great Osborn and the movie was good.

Odin plucked out one of his eyes at Mimir's well as an offering so that he could drink from it to gain knowledge. It's part of the Nordic mythology, but in some of the Thor books I do recall a metal piece that would be attached to Odin's crown/helmet covering his right eye.
