Meet the new Spider-Man!

After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012.  The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt.  Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Today’s confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.

The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.

On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said, “Spider-Man is a classic superhero -- a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will  depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker.”

Producer Avi Arad added, “I’m incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.”

Producer Laura Ziskin said, “We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction.  We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men.  In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen.”

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.

Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film "The Social Network."  He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story "I’m Here," which premiered at Sundance this year.  He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek’s "Never Let Me Go," due for release later this year.

Other notable screen credits include Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus" playing opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger, Robert Redford’s "Lions For Lambs," where he starred alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films’ “Red Riding Trilogy – 1974” directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley’s “Boy A,” for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008.

Garfield’s career began in theatre and in 2006 his performances in “Beautiful Thing” (Sound Space/Kit Productions), “The Overwhelming,” and “Burn/Chatroom/Citizenship” (Royal National Theatre) won him the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard awards and the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Other notable theatre credits include “Romeo and Juliet” (Manchester Royal Exchange) and “Kes” (Manchester Royal Exchange), for which he received the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Awards 2004.

I think that Andrew Garfield is going to be amazing as Spiderman! Bring it on.

I think that Jake Gylenhall would be the best to play as Spider-Man! His stunts in Prince of Persia makes him to be fit in the role as Spider-Man!

Tobey WAS a great spiderman, but he got fired along with Raimi, soooo, now this guy, "Andrew Garfield" is playing PP...... I have to say, he looks a few years too old to play a teenager

Why isn't Tobey Miguire spider-man anymore. He was a great spider-man to me. I am a huge fan of Marvel and spider-man so Stan or Marc Webb need to do something about this, NOOWW!!

Tobey Maguire was a horrible Peter Parker and a worst Spider-Man. I mostly blame that on the juvenile, weak, cheesy, dumb scripts and direction...not up to the full potential of Spider-Man. Sam Raimi get a lot of blame for pretending to be a Spider-Man fan (Mr Sandman killed Uncle Ben). I'm glad Sam Raimi is gone, and with him he takes a boring mute with no personality in Tobey's Peter and Spidey. I've seen several of Andrew Garfield's films, he has a lot of talent, no doubt about it. But if the writers and the director doesn't know what makes Spider-Man, his villains and supporting characters tick, having talented actors won't mean a thing.

I agree that the Spider-man story had to be told very well or don t make a movie of it. Most youngsters kwow Spider-man story from the saterday morning cartoons. Wich is a very good story by the way but not the right one. For example,Spider-man did get his "black suite"as a gift because of a secret war which he and other super *heroes (*Cap Amerika,Iron-man,the Hulk ,Fantastic Four etc)won. Back to earth he soon found out that this suite is a living creature, a symbiote with a dark past. Sam Rami did a good job to make a movie of our webswinger and i am a big fan of both but Sam has forgotten a few things about the story of Peter Parker/Spider-man. Yes he is a nerd and you can read that in the older comics but he is also very inventive for example, making Spider-locators/bugs to find the bad guys when he hasn t or didn t had his Spider-sence yet or lost it in a fight. I haven t seen this creavity of building things yet in Sams movies. Spider-man is strong but there are always other bad guys who are stronger. Spider-mans greater strengt is his mind and the way of thinking, solving problems etc. Spider-man 3 wasn t a very strong movie with Venom. Venom was simply way too small when you look at the comic Venom I also have my doubts at the end of Venom in this movie, why this way? (Green goblin shouldn t were this kind of mask by the way in part one) I say,let the new people gif it a try and please go on with the story or start over again but this time much better i hope. Sam Rami was a Spider-man fan but if you ask me ,not 100% On the other hand it is very diffecult to please every Spider, movie fan. In the mean time, lets see what will happen next

ok guys, let's think this through a momement. I think we all can agree that Spidey-3 was not a good movie. I personally have some beef with Spidey-2 with Doc Oc's arms thinking for themselves and him being all "oh what have I done" at the end. The fact is that, although a memorable #1, these movies are just not up to par with what's being put out there now. They don't even get into the traditional story line which is far more exciting. A reboot, fingers crossed, would be an attempt to step up the Spidey movies so they can achieve their full potential. I'm hopefull at this point. Let's see what comes out of it

I'm still trying to figure out why everyone is blaming Marvel for poor decisions on this movie (not that I'm saying they necessarily are poor choices, at least not yet anyway). Sony is making this movie, not Marvel. And Disney has barely any influence on what happens to Marvel at the moment, let alone the films made from the licenses Marvel has sold to different companies. The only power either Marvel or Disney have is to take back the licenses, but they can't do that until the dates in the contract. Plus Disney have said they will take back licenses if they feel other companies either aren't making full use of them or if they fail to be a worthwhile investment.Neither Marvel nor Disney can actually inflict any real influence upon this film, apart from suggestions. That's it. If you don't believe it look up the Fantastic Four movie from the 90's it was made simply so the company could keep the license and they never distributed it. If Marvel could influence the film, I'm sure they would have made sure they actually made a film for distribution other than keep it with a company that they weren't making money off.

“Spider-Man is a classic superhero -- a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man.".....Yeah..TOBY! Peter Parker is a HUGE NERD. When they start throwing in words like "cool" to describe PP, you know they've taken a wrong turn. I fear this is Disney's influence. Anyone seen a picture of this actor? No offence to him personally, but he looks a lot like that twit from Twilight. Well... I loved the first three. I guess I'll have to be content with them.

you cant replace toby mcquire man and even if u did u cant make Peter Parker a teenager forever make him grow up get married dont make him an eternal kid gosh whats up with these origin stories go on with the freakin story already Spider-Man goes through so much why dont u make a movie of that, huh?!

Anybody ever think of the possibility that Mr. Rami didn't want to do another one? I know Tobey Maguire wasn't exactly jumping at the chance. I'm going to adopt a wait and see policy.

Marvel acts like they respect us fans by being loyal to us well i think their only loyal to their pockets. For the fans of the sam rami spider-man movies that don't know yet what happen well lets say marvel was so greedy they want to rush mr rami for a 2011 release starting this year and without having a script with them at the time or a layout and sam rami knew he needed more time after all spider-man 3 wasn't his best work but the same happen to him in that movie they rush him so much and pressured him to fit venom in it he didn't get to set up the venom story the way it played in the animated series. Because if your remember spider-man 2 he had jonah jameson jr , yes the astronaut who brings the symbiote venom back afther an accident in space, and hes no where in spider-man 3 so fast was the rush they dont show how or where venom came from or the rock he's attached to is called promethium x , if still bonded together of course. At this rate we will be seeing a ironman reboot in 4 years cant they learn from their rival dc comics with what they did with batman and give the director his time and space to come up with something great. Good going marvel your even rebooting fantastic four it might of not been great but it wasn't a batman and robin dissaster either $h!t nowadays i want to switch to dc if it wasn't for x-men but just try and remake that and im done you. Tell the story right the first time or dont tell it at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

Whiny Tobey worked in the first movie, but it seemed like overkill in No 3, which I have a love/hate relationship with. And I agree that every time I see Cap I'll be expecting him to crack a joke or scream "flame on!

I hate to say this again but TOBEY SUCKED HARDCORE. I didn't even want to go to movies he was such a whiny, &&!$&%& of a Peter Parker!!! I basically forced myself to go and then tried to blur him out. Can anyone here say they enjoyed Tobey looking like KD Lang in SM? I don't know much about Garfield but he looks more like Peter Parker to me and I'm really looking forward to his version of Spidey. Also, don't get me started on Chris Evans being cast as Cap. He played Torch amazingly well. But then casting him again as a character that is supposed to represent all that is virtuous and true? After being hothead torch??? C'mon!!!!! Are they really having that much of a shortage in Hollywood with blonde haired blue eyed men??? I wanted cry when I saw that choice. And there are gonna be scenes when Tony and Steve go toe to toe on what is right and wrong. And Evans is gonna be able to hold his own with Downey Jr? I think not. Ok I'm done.

i can not f###ing believe THIS how can MARVEL do this look i know that somebody is looking at this from marvel and please why a n ew actor tobey was doing a fine job and why did u need to get this ahole u couldve styed with tobey or gotten somebody better what is the point of rebooting this after just 8 years or you know what just make a spiderman 2099 film that would have been better im sorry but im losing you to DC marvel please if you are gonna make this movie do it well

finally! There was a huge need for a Spider-man revamp. Hopefully this time they will portray the green goblin as the terrifying villain he is supposed to be. Another thing; hopefully they will make spiderman into a true super hero flick as apposed to the incredibly over dramatic nonsense in previous films with really lame moral lessons such as 'forgiveness' and the likes!

What are you basing that on irongirl? I've heard a lot of people claim Disney has been ruining Marvel without any straight facts.Plus this movie is being made by Sony, not Marvel or Disney. They actually only get a limited say in what happens with the film. And Tobey Maguire didn't quit, he was never asked to do the next Spider-Man, just like they actually never asked Raimi to do it. Both wanted to, but weren't given the chance. And actually 30 is considered a bit old in the film industry. There's a perception among Hollywood film-makers that people only want to see young twenty-somethings in films and not really teens or anyone older.

If the Right a Good Script like Spider-man 2 it will be fine but they gotta tell a great story not just think a Villian is gonna sell the movie that's what killed the original batman franchise make it about Peter Parker not about the flavour of the month character that really aren't that interesting and hopefully this means we will see Spider-Man in the Avengers movie or Maybe They will understand that if they include Wolverine and Spider-man in Avengers 2 they will have a definate block-buster movie.

He was from the imaginarium of doctor parnassus, or however you spell it. He looks way to old to be teen spidey. and tobey didnt just "quit". The story line was awful, honestly, the volture as the main villain? it was supposed to be the lizard, but because he isnt human, there was no way. So, yes, the vulture. Black cat was going to be in it, and as her, they wanted anne hathaway. Great actress, but not for that role, so they scratche the black cat idea, and made her the Vultress, a feamle version of, how did you guess? The vulture. Tobey quit because he thinks he is getting old... YOU ARE IN YOUR 30'S MORON, THATS CONSIDERED YOUNG!!!!!!! especially since you look like your 20 too.

I think we need to see what he can do. They redid Hulk with Ed Norton and I thought second one was a hell of a lot better than the first one. I also didn't think Robert Downey Jr. would make good Tony Stark, but he pulled it off. I know those a big name actors, but that's why I thing Garfield could pull it off also. They have past mistakes they can learn from also. Nuff said.

Tobey Maguire didn't want 2 do it anymore. But this new guy actually looks like Peter Parker. They had 2 reboot it bcause Tobey dropped out. Who knows? Mayb he'll play a better Peter Parker/Spider-Man than Tobey.

I personally loved the Raimi Spider-Man films (Except maybe 3). And I was upset when I heard that they were rebooting it. but I admit from what I've seen of Andrew Garfield, he seems like a decent choice for Peter Parker. But I'll always think of Tobey Maguire when I think of Spider-Man as a whole. I'm just not looking forward to sitting through another origin story so quickly. And I can't see this guy playing a 16 year old. 18 maybe, but not 16. (plus, I wasn't really a fan of Ultimate Spidey, which is apparently where the script is based off of.)
