Meet the new Incredible Hulk, who'll be smashing and assembling in "Marvel Studios' The Avengers" movie in 2012!

It's official: Mark Ruffalo is Bruce Banner.

Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner) on stage at Comic-Con 2010
Last night at Marvel Studios' presentation in San Diego Comic-Con's mammoth Hall H, producer Kevin Feige brought the actor onstage with the rest of the cast for "Marvel Studios' The Avengers" as well as the film's director, Joss Whedon.

The award-winning actor will Hulk-out in director Joss Whedon's "Marvel Studios' The Avengers," alongside Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson). The film opens on May 4, 2012.

One of the original Avengers in the Marvel Comics universe, the Incredible Hulk has had a long association with the team both as ally and enemy. Bruce Banner has always struggled to contain the monster inside himself, though whether or not he'll succeed this time out is anyone's guess. As for what role he'll play in "Marvel Studios' The Avengers," well, we can't give everything away all at once! But you can probably count on at least a little smashing being involved.

I watched the The Avengers and it was FREAKING AWESOME! I like them all but the Hulk/Bruce Banner STANDOUT among the rest. Mark Ruffalo did an AMAZING job and he gave JUSTICE to Hulk/Bruce Banner compared to the other 2 Hulk movies. Marvel and Disney made an EXCELLENT decision for giving the role to Mark Ruffalo. We NEED a new Hulk movie of Mark Ruffalo! WE NEED MORE!

I think that the decision to recast Bruce Banner is a terrible decision, I have been dreading the day when these movies give up on the continuity of the characters, I think that this one is a huge mistake, I hope that @ least Hulk looks the same as he did in the other movie, I dont like the choice for director either, I dont know if anyone ever watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel but they are both so horrible, and I think that is a bad idea to have this gut doing the Avengers, and I think they need to undo this Ruffalo thing and work it out with Norton, I am disgusted with the whole situation, Norton doesnt possess the talent, ok Buffy

Yes, the Avengers will be amazing. And yes, to say that not having Norton as Banner "ruins everything" is silly, because in the end there's no doubt that Ruffalo will do a good job and the Hulk will still be lean, mean, and green. That said, I still think recasting Norton is a misstep, and one that hurts the continuity of these films that Marvel so brilliantly set out to tie together. Thor, Cap, and Iron Man will have continuity between films, and the Hulk will not, even with Tony Stark himself making an appearing at the end of the Hulk film. What can I say, I love continuity. And in films like this, I think that's reasonable. Take The Dark Knight, for instance. When Maggie-Rachel got killed, I didn't care. If Katie-Rachel had gotten blown up, the dramatic impact would have been greater because of the continuity between BB and TDK. Casting continuity is always important in films like this. Edward Norton is what made the Incredible Hulk a great film. We are connected with the character as portrayed by Norton. Now, we have to reconnect with the Banner character in the Avengers (good luck BTW, considering he shouldn't be in the film that much, given the size of the ensemble cast and the fact that the Hulk is CG, anyway). The connection will simply not be the same, no matter how good of a job Ruffalo does. And therein lies the tragedy.

You guys keep complaining about how Edward Norton not being the Hulk ruins everything... It's not Marvels fault that Norton threw a hissy fit and left because things weren't done his way.

Good callwith Ruffalo. Norton was fine, but anyone under the impression that he was the critical piece of the puzzle needs to find a different cause to champion. Not a big deal.

Edward Norton or nobody. Not just because he portrayed what was, for me, the best Bruce Banner ever, but because Marvel has gone out of its way to tie these films together. Right before seeing Iron Man 2, I watched Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk. Why? Because the genius of Marvel's strategy makes every one of the these films feel as if they are part of the same franchise. Bringing RDJ at the end of Hulk was brilliant. That said, recasting Norton completely undoes what Marvel has been working so hard to create. That said, as much as I love Ed Norton's work, I have no doubt that this debacle is not entirely Marvel's fault. More than anything, I just wish both parties could have set aside their issues for the sake of the films and the fans. What a missed opportunity.

Ed Nortons HULK is arguably Marvels strongest movie to date, replacing him is one of the dumbest decisions in cinematic history and Kevin Feige again is a fool.

Wile.E.Scientist
Wile.E.Scientist

Kevin Feige is a bonafide fool, this cat has NO clue what he's doing and needs replacing fast. Dudes got NO idea what the Marvel fans want, you know the people who pay him his insanely undeserved wage nor does he care about them or the legacy of Marvel, he's a disgrace to the company. Edward Norton should of never been allowed to leave, let alone have been forced out by some pencil pushing clown who probably doesnt know the differance between Bruce Banner and Bruce Wayne. The second he released that unproffessional press release with its retarded reasoning for why Ed Norton was replaced he'd of been fired if it was my company. This guy is destroying what Stan Lee built and brought to the world with his retarded decisions and im not talking just this Hulk fiasco either.

Chris Evans better start hitting the gym hard right now if he wants to live up to Cap's 240 pound legend.

WTF?!?! Ruffalo couldn't hold Norton's jock as far as playing Bruce Banner (not to mention acting in general.) They might as well have cast Paul Walker or Keanu Reeves. I can't help but to think that this all has something to do with Disney taking over Marvel.

Please, Please, Please get Ruffalo to lose weight. Banner is supposed to be frail and geeky. Eric Bana destroyed that image lets not do it again. Please!!

Ed Norton IS Bruse Banner, this Ruffalo is not worthy to be an Avenger.

Any desire to get Edward Norton back is ignored by Marvel. They like ignoring their fans, why else would Red Hulk (who almost everybody hates) become an Avenger?

Although I did really like Ed Norton in this role, I have had time to "relax" about the switch but also Mark Ruffalo is a great actor. I look forward to him being in Avengers and future movies like more Hulk movies, but also make appearances in IM3, Cap2, etc. I think they need to have the Avengers movie start us in the middle of the Army chasing Hulk, with the army being no match we have the Avengers come in and we have a great Hulk vs Iron Man, Cap and Thor...kinda like how the first 20 mins of Saving Private Ryan was intense, this what they should do with Avengers.

KIQUE-MAN

Forget the first movie my friend,The Incredible Hulk is the only one that enter in the same continuity that Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers. And they change Norton because of problems with Marvel.

Are the other 2 Hulk movies gonna be in sync with the Avengers. Or those 2 movies on there own? Never saw the "Incredible Hulk" movie, just the first one. I'm confused with all the actors replacing each other for the Bruce Banner role!!!
