Agent M with Captain America's shield, on the set of the ''Captain America: The First Avenger'' film

By Ryan Penagos

Last week I joined a select group of reporters and blogger-type folks on a secret mission: visit the "Captain America: The First Avenger" movie set in England. To say it was an amazing experience would be an understatement.

I swore an oath on Cap's shield that I wouldn't reveal too much about my visit too soon, so I beg you merry Marvelites to take my tantalizing teases about all the thrilling things I saw and experienced in stride--all will be revealed in time!

Some choice tidbits from my visit to the Cap set:

  • I ate lunch with Hydra soldiers.
  • I learned who and what has influenced star Chris Evans in his portrayal of Steve Rogers aka Captain America in the film.
  • I talked with Hugo Weaving who plays Red Skull/Johann Shmidt in the film while he was in full Red Skull makeup--AND IT WAS AWESOME!
  • I watched director Joe Johnston film a scene, experiencing the magic of the movies up close. All I can say is "wow."
  • I had my mind blown several times by visiting the art department, the costume department and the prosthetics workshop as well as seeing many of the props in the movie.
  • I posed with one of the actual Captain America shields used in the film--as you can see in the photo above.

That's really just the proverbial tip of the iceberg, though. In the coming months, leading the release of "Captain America: The First Avenger" in theaters on July 22, 2011, I'll have interviews, profiles, features and MANY more details about the film to share. Stay tuned, True Believers!

In addition to "Captain America: The First Avenger," Marvel Studios most recently released the highly anticipated sequel, "Iron Man 2," starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, and will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Thor" on May 6, 2011 and "Marvel Studios' The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

Stay tuned to Marvel.com for the official word on all things to do with "Captain America: The First Avenger" and all Marvel movies!

I hope that shield is made of VIBRANIUM like in the Comics. Hehehe! I still can't get over casting Chris Evans as CAPTAIN AMERICA because he was first and foremost the HUMAN TORCH on the MARVEL MOVIE UNIVERSE. But let's wait and see.

What the heck is with that shield? It should be red, white and navy blue ... like the American flag. He is Captain America after all. Look at the picture behind Agent M. Why is the shield he's holding red, silver and royal blue. Geesh! Get it right, Hollywood ... for once.

I have to say, even though cap is probably the last of the classic iconic marvel super heroes to get a movie, i am less enthused about this than i am about many other comic properties being made into live-action movies. Cap's story is less epic, his rogues gallery is weak, and his patriotic all american boy scout spirit is kind of outadetd and doesnt jibe with todays politics. I understand that this will be an origin story and therefore take place mostly in WWII, but am much more enthused about the Thor, green lantern, x-men first class...etc films than cap.Of course I reserve final judgement until the trailer drops, my hopes are that they make it a gritty and emotional war film, with historically accurate costumes/set designs, which just happens to have a super-soldier as the main character. If done properly cap could become just as popular as superman(christopher reeve era), was to conservative americans, and may be able to inspire the young generation into a newly patriotic frame of mind. Doubtful though considering the current state of American decline & governmental mistrust. Either way America needs this movie now more than ever, make it good, and they will come.
