Ever since Tony Stark first met Nick Fury at the end of the first "Iron Man," fans have gotten hints of the larger universe that the films reside in. Since then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued to expand across "The Incredible Hulk," Iron Man 2" and the upcoming "Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger" films, but fans have also seen the world grow larger in comic tie-ins such as IRON MAN 2: PUBLIC IDENTITY.

Now, with CAPTAIN AMERICA: FIRST VENGEANCE giving readers more of Steve Rogers' story from the film, we look back at the comics that have helped shape the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside the films themselves.

And don't forget to check out the first issue of CAPTAIN AMERICA: FIRST VENGEANCE right now for FREE!

Before "Iron Man 2" hit theaters last summer, fan-favorite creators Peter David and Sean Chen offered up this official comics adaptation of Shellhead's first cinematic adventure. Bringing all the bigscreen action to the comics page, David and Chen captured all the twists and turns of "Iron Man" right for your bookshelf complete with an extended conversation between Tony Stark and Nick Fury not seen in the film! Paired with IRON MAN 2: PUBLIC IDENTITY and AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., this brings the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the comics where it all began.

This three-issue limited series laid the groundwork for Shellhead's titanic sequel, flashing back to Howard Stark and Anton Vanko's relationship while also dealing with the fallout of Tony Stark revealing his alter ego to the public in the present day.

Written by Joe Casey and co-plotted by "Iron Man 2" screenwriter Justin Theroux, PUBLIC IDENTITY took readers deeper into Iron Man's world to show what Stark did with his armor in between the films, including saving a news crew from a group of Ten Rings agents. It also revealed the government's response in dealing with Iron Man and Tony Stark, as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross attempted to help America build its own kind of armor...with disastrous results.

This one-shot collected three short stories previously released on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited, each starring a different member of S.H.I.E.L.D.--Nick Fury, the Black Widow, and Agent Phil Coulson. All three helped establish each character's further role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from the Widow's undercover position in Stark Industries to Agent Coulson's recruitment efforts. Given all three characters play a role in 2012's "Marvel Studios' The Avengers," this gives you the perfect primer on these behind-the-scenes players integral to the shadowy S.H.I.E.L.D.

Check out CAPTAIN AMERICA: FIRST VENGEANCE #1 now for the next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and stay tuned to Marvel.com for all the latest on Marvel Studios' upcoming slate of films including "Thor" on May 6, "Captain America: The First Avenger" on July 22, "Marvel Studios' The Avengers" on May 4, 2012 and "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013.

I disagree they should only include the works that marvel studios have done without any other producers, i.e. 20th century fox for instance...You'll notice the best marvel movies thus far; Iron Man 1 & 2, the Incredible Hulk are the only ones without outside influence. I'm just thankful Captain America and Thor along with the Avengers movie are strictly marvel produced.

I hope They include X-Men: First Class and Spider-Man in this new universe they should also put things in the movies so you know they are in the same universe you. Like spider-man watching news footage of the avengers of t.v. stuff like that so you really get the feeling that they are all in the same universe.
