From Midgard to Asgard and a couple places in-between, this summer’s "Thor" movie had some eye-popping special effects and the timeless story of a boy growing into a man…with hammers, gods and spies to boot! As we prepare for the Blu-ray and DVD release of the film on September 13, we take a look back at "Thor" to pinpoint the five coolest moments given to us by director Kenneth Branagh and company.

Odin banishes Thor to Earth

5. Odin Banishes Thor to Earth

Although the first section of the movie is full of swashbuckling action, the real weight of the film doesn’t come into focus until Thor’s father Odin exiles him to Midgard for his brashness in attacking the Frost Giants. This humility gives Thor an adversary bigger than any one foe or monster: Himself. The scene where Odin takes Mjolnir from his son and sends him to the Earthly realm showed movie-goers how serious this movie could be.

4. King Loki

After his shadowy machinations finally come to the forefront when his father falls into the Odinsleep, the long-simmering tensions that Loki had carried with him came forth as he’s crowned King. The secret that Loki was the son of a Frost Giant and that Odin had taken him after their last war pushed the horn-helmeted trickster past the breaking point. The slow-panning scene of Loki sitting on Odin’s throne as ruler of Asgard seals the deal and shows that there’s a new boss in town.

3. The Destroyer Comes To Town

After being awakened from Odin’s vault, the indestructible Destroyer sets foot on Earth with orders from Loki to kill his brother Thor. Like a more ominous and evil version of Tony Stark’s first steps in his own armor in "Iron Man," the Destroyer’s plodding footsteps on New Mexico soil--and later into town--show the full destructive force coming for Thor and anyone standing by his side.

2. Thor on Earth

Seeing Thor attempt to acclimate to the strange customs of us Earth people could have been a movie unto itself. Of all the witty moments in the movie, the one that stands out the most is the diner scene where, upon drinking coffee for the first time, Thor bellows, “This drink…I like it! Another!” before smashing the mug on the ground in an Asgardian manner.

Heimdall guards the Rainbow Bridge in "Thor"

1. The Destruction of the Bifröst Bridge

As the one gateway from Asgard to the outside world, the Bifröst Bridge is one of the most contested spots in the battle between Loki and Thor. In a last-ditch effort to prevent Loki from destroying the Frost Giants’ home of Jotunheim, Thor destroys the Rainbow Bridge and ends up clutching for his life in the wreckage. Of all of the special effects in the movie, the depiction of this monument--and its destruction--shows the same imagination that inhabited Thor's original Marvel adventures.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the epic adventure "Thor" spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

"Thor" is from a screenplay by Ashley Edward Miller & Zack Stentz and Don Payne and a story by J. Michael Straczynski and Mark Protosevich. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige will produce the film. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Marvel Studio’s Co-President, Louis D'Esposito, will executive produce.

In addition to "Thor," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Marvel's The Avengers" on May 4, 2012 and "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013.

one of the best scenes is when thor does the dramatic slow walk to face the destroyer alone without his powers
