Don Cheadle reprises his role as Lieutenant Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes, a.k.a. Iron Patriot, in Marvel's "Iron Man 3" this Friday, and this time around fans will get the chance to explore even more of his friendship with Tony Stark.
"Iron Man 3"has all the hallmarks of a classic Shane Black buddy film such as "Lethal Weapon," and Cheadle was happy to play with that dynamic on the screen.
"I was glad that there was more to do, and that we got to dig a little deeper into the relationship with these two guys," the actor relates. "Clearly [Tony's] dealing with a lot, and trying to figure out his identity. You get to see more in this movie why they are friends, and how they compare and contrast one another."
Cheadle loves Rhodey's role in "Iron Man 3," serving as a very down-to-Earth influence on the film's star.

"He is a grounding force for Tony, a counterpoint to the livewire aspect of who Tony is," describes Cheadle. "That is my lane in this film. Though we get to have fun [and] bust each other's chops, we really are the foil for one another."
But it wasn't only his time in the suite that Cheadle enjoyed, as Rhodey gets more action outside of the suit in this film, showcasing his military training and fighting skills.
"I'm glad that in this one I got to do more of the action and be outside the suit. I am a physical actor and I enjoy that stuff a lot. I try to stay in that kind of shape. In my TV show, 'House of Lies,' it seems like every other episode I have some article of clothing off," the actor laughs.
Marvel's "Iron Man 3" pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, "Iron Man 3" is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic super hero Iron Man, who first appeared in the pages of TALES OF SUSPENSE #39 in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with THE INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1 in May of 1968.
