I GOTTA SAY THIS FIRST BEFORE I GET BASHED BY THE COMIC FAITHFULS. IM A MARVEL COMIC READER OF OVER 25 YEARS AND IM ALSO A PRODUCER. FACE THE FACTS GUYS, A PRODUCTION HOUSE AS BIG AS MARVEL/DISNEY IS NOT TARGETING COMIC READERS. THATS A TOUGH PILL TO SWALLOW. THE TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC IS MUCH YOUNGER THAN MOST OF US. GUYS.......DISNEY. DISNEY HAS HAD SOME GREAT MOVIES THAT TARGET AN OLDER DEMO BUT COMIC READERS ARE NEVER THE TARGET. NEVER. COMICS HAVE BECOME POPULAR AGAIN THANKS TO THE MOVIES, AGAIN LETS BE HONEST WE ALL HAVE SEEN A LARGER CROWD DRAWN TO OUR LOCAL COMIC SHOPS, THEY ARE NOT COMIC FAITHFULS LIKE US. THESE NEW READERS DONT KNOW THE HISTORY OF SOME OF OUR FAVORITE CHARACTERS OR STORIES BEHIND THEM. THEY JUST SAW A MOVIE WHICH THEY LOVED AND WANT TO KNOW MORE. WHICH IS GREAT! I NEVER WANT TO SEE A COMIC SHOP CLOSE DOWN BUT THESE FILMS ARE NOT FOR COMIC FAITHFULS. SO I CONTINUE TO WATCH THEM. SOME I ENJOY AND SOME ARE TRASH (ALL SONY FILMS) BUT I STILL WATCH THEM AT SOME POINT. MAKE MINE MARVEL!

They should really not move this thing forward but, move it back six months, after firing the directer and writer and casting crew. Start over. Do it right!

The Scott Lang plot is good but Hank Pym should've been someone younger ! It would've been sick to see Hank as Yellowjacket and Goliath in the Avengers movies and future cameos in other films or agents of shield.

If he was younger we could've had a Scott Lang as Ant-man, Hank Pym as Yellowjacket, Janet as Wasp and Hanks WIFE NOT SCOTTS, Bill Foster as Goliath( PERFECT FOR ADDING MORE DIVERSITY TO FILMS) in the AVENGERS 3 when they face THANOS.

It sucks Hank or Janet won't be in AGE OF ULTRON EITHER

Why couldn't they cast someone younger and just make him create the ant-man tech in the late 70s or 80s or when Tony met Aldrich Killian?

Also in the first Avengers film Hank Pym could've easily been used instead of Eric Selvig.

Does anyone think Paul Rudd is a good choice?

No, not really. Personally, I Would've picked Simon Baker to be a better fit for the role of Hank Pym.

Ant man sucks hank pym sucks Michael Douglas sucks Wasp sucks commas suck Scott who? The only cool thing about pym really is his "son" Ultron and "grandson" Vision. Was anyone really mad that Hank and Janet were replaced with Clint and Natasha, but now i guess they need to introduce Hank because of this age of ultron crap ultron . Ultron played by James Spader not voiced by James Spader, does this mean the robot Hitler is going to be cyborg? An android? Scott wHO? Give me my marvel max knights I mean Defenders and let's get thisThanos story moving stop wasting my time with time travel ant man and scott WHO?  The FLIPSIDEDISPILF  these new marvel movies have been pretty non disappointing so maybe this ant man will almost alright.

How about marvel make a live action Mickey Mouse movie where the title character is played by a ferret....what? They both have fur

Fans are not rejoicing for Micahel Douglas as Hank Pym ! What kind of move was that to misuse one of the founding avengers and a complex character like Hank Pym ! PPaulrudd has a more diverse fan base ! He wouldve been great for pym ! Only old white people care about Michael Douglas so nobody is gonna end up caring who Pym is ! Nobody wantsto see Lang with the avengers ! We want to see Hank and Janet alongside the avengers !No disrespect to Michael Douglas he wouldve been good if this was 20 years ago !

Thanks Marvel. I didn't know Ant-Man was a comedic super spy.

I guess Hank Pym the flawed human being with a super hero identity crisis, marital problems, and yet genius scientIst, creator of Ultron and original founding member of The Avengers doesn't matter anymore.

Thanks Marvel for taking the original and longest serving Ant-Man / Avenger, a Sci-Fi action super hero, a peer of Iron Man whose intelligence rivals if not exceeds that of Tony Stark and turning him into a joke.

I couldn't care less for the character of Scott Lang. His leGacy is pretty short lived when compared to the rich history of Hank Pym & Janet Van Dyne.

But Marvel know what they're doing with their alternate reimaginings. They're laughing all the way to the bank with a far out edgy British comedy director, comedy actor in the lead role and a 60's super spy heist scenario - Austin Powers anyone???

Comics are entertainment. I've been reading them since my childhood. I love the drama, action, suspense, fun and humor in well balanced story telling.

Unfortunately since Iron Man 3 it seems to me that Marvel / Disney are more focussed on comedy-centric films with less of a balance on mature, dramatic story telling.

my dad said that ultron was created by galactus. is that right??? i know that ant-man made him, but that is just stuck in head.

You're right. Hank Pym created Ultron based on his own brain patterns. As you know Ultron then developed his own artificial intelligence, rebelled and went rogue.

isn't the second avengers with ultron???

Magnetic_Eye, you are sooo right!!!

Magnetic_Eye

Hank Pym has held the Ant-Man identity far longer than Scott Lang and should've been prioritized as the main character. From "Tales To Astonish" through to ALL volumes of The Avengers, it was Hank Pym as Ant-Man most of the time.

I still think Ant-Man & The Wasp as the original founding members of The Avengers, should've featured in The Avengers movie. IMO, Joss Whedon would still have worked his magic to make the dynamics work.

You can still attempt to do something fresh, new and different using the original character as a contemporary Avenger. I don't buy into this notion that using Scott Lang is going to appeal to a broader audience. Good screenwriters know how to write cinematic character development and how to make it work.

Can you imagine a Superman, Batman or Spider-Man film without the pivotal characters of Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne or Peter Parker???

There may well be more movie fans than comic book fans, but in some ways that's kind of irrelevent. It's like going on a ride at Disney land and not buying into the history and literature of the characters. It's surface level fandom motivated by over commercialization.

Furthermore, what's with the 60's super spy heist scenario??? We have a comedic director and a comedy actor. Ant-Man is not a comedIc super spy. I'm all for movie adaptations being a little different to the original source material, but when it steers so far off into alternate reimaginings, Marvel continues to lose my custom at the box

I havent really been following the production of this moVie at all other than what I read here. Does anyone know who The villain for this film will be? Vision maybe?? Oh, what if we find out that Hank Pym's the real "father" of Ultron and Tony Stark based his A.I. off of Pym's work? Since he's so old and probably a predominant figure in modern science... I could see that since it's kind of hinted at that Tony Stark is responsible for making UltrOn in Avengers: AoU.

All the "old Pym" naysayers, you could easily still have an active Wasp on the team since she is much younger than Pym (she was his late ex-colleague's daughter). I mean c'mon, look who they cast for Pym: Michael Douglas, a man who's older than his father-in-law. THAT'S how big the age gap is between him and Catherine Zeta Jones.

I just hope they stay away from all the psychological troubles and domestic abuse Pym has due to either depression, Pym particle overexposure, etc. He could still suit up as Giant-Man and they just do his action scenes with him walking around a miniature city, haha. Right?

Having both Scott Lang AND Hank Pym in this is essentially the Ant-Man's best of both worlds. The scientist that discovers the particles that make all these superhero personnas possible (Ant-Man, Wasp, Yellowjacket, Goliath, Giant-Man) and the next-biggest name to don the Ant-Man helmet.

I have a feeling the Ant-Man film will have a lot of the same feeling/style to it as Captain America's movie did: a period film (most of Pym's stuff begins in the 60's) that has to breeze through all his earlier missions to quickly bring him to where we most want him: active with the Avengers.

Good luck, Mr. Edgar Wright. Just don't let this comicbook film drag or sag in the middle like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World did. No offense intended. But it won't flop. It's a Marvel Studios film, after all.

I second that notion as long as it's a younger Hank Pym aka Ant-Man & Janet Van Dyne aka Wasp, the ORIGINAL founding members of The Avengers.  :-)

@hollywood0239

I thought the same thing.  But...what IF...Douglas' Pym is a colleague of HOWARD Stark?  What if Pym was a founding SHIELD agent?  Maybe Pym and Stark develop an A.I. program that becomes self-aware as Ultron?  What if Ultron tries to murder Pym so that he can marry Pym's wife, Janet Van Dyne, and Janet dies in the battle?  Maybe this causes Pym to leave SHIELD and hang up his Ant-Man identity?  The AI program goes under lock and key for decades until Tony discovers it in Avengers 2?  And I know...Ant-Man comes out AFTER Avengers 2.  But all I'm saying is give it a chance!  These are just my ideas; I'm sure Marvel has signed off on an incredible plot/story!

Also, on another site, a poster said what if there was a SHIELD or STark A.I. project that somehow gives Jarvis a metal body and turns him against the Avengers?

I can now picture a Spider-Man movie without Peter PaRker thanks to the awesome team bringing us the new Ultimate Comics Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Great storyline, characters, and a WORTHY new Spider-Man worthy of the legacy. The "Spider-Men" storyline had Me geeking out more than a few times!

@Shefros How/Why would this be a joke? Ant-Man is 1 of the original Avengers, as he was there when they started the team whereas Cap was still waiting to be discovered frozen in ice before he became their leader. Did you not know that? Why waste posting space, then? Or are you "one of a class of supernatural creatures that dwell in caves or mountains and elicit negative or inflammatory remarks to the internet"?

@Bova @hollywood0239 Why does Pym as Howard Starks people interest people? Pym shouldnt be a founding SHIELD member hes a founding AVENGER. I understand people are just trying to piece this together but IMO Pym shouldve been part of the Avengers team ! Janet shouldnt be dead they both should be interacting with the team..its like a xmen movie with no cyclops and jean

Ginevra372
Ginevra372

@Shefros@Ginevra372

Wrong, Daredevil was done by Fox, the same studio responsible for all these disappointing X-Men movies. Only recently have the rights to that character reverted back to Marvel now and they'll be putting him in a TV miniseries deal they cut with Net-Flix to release the "Defenders": 4 miniseries to come together (Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones).

Fox still owns the X-Men & Fantastic Four, Sony owns Spider-Man (Blade & Ghost Rider reverted back to Marvel recently due to inactivity), Disney/Marvel owns the rest. I wish they'd get the rights back or somehow find a way to have more creative control on those they don't own so that Fox doesn't keep killing the franchise. Sure, the movies still make $$$ in the box offices since we all clamor to go see them immediately, but any negative movie reviews are where they need to look and recognize that the films are disappointing. Might as well call the franchise "Wolverine & Co." now instead, when there's sooooo much more potential in all the characters utilized properly.

If you didn't know any of this, then you should do your research first before posting.

"....its like an xmen movie with no cyclops and jean"

That's exactly right. A very good point. Well said.

How is it that every other Marvel team can get the the original super-hero couples right, but only partially in the Avengers movie and now Ant-Man???

And the worn out cliche that the MCU isn't the same as the print medium is a fallacious argument, because it renders itself invalid when other super-hero couples in the MCU have been adapted directly from the print medium.

Bova

@PotentPoundz @Bova @hollywood0239  When it was confirmed that Douglas would be playing Pym, I just surmised that he would be H. Stark's colleague.  I find that possibility fascinating, that his intellect and scientific skill could be a SHIELD cornerstone.  That opens the possibility for a dramatic opening scene watching Pym in his heyday, battling pre-WWII threats as the 1st Ant-Man.  I think that in this roundabout way, Pym WILL be part of the Avengers initiative and that Marvel honors his history in this portrayal.

All along, I've been the "rah-rah" guy, just trying to be optimistic about the film, and just thankful that Marvel even greenlighted Ant-Man.

There should have been "a lot" of things about The Avengers film:  Black Widow and Hawkeye were founding members?  The heroes didn't team-up on their own, it was the government's doing?  Tony Stark didn't even want anything to do with the Initiative?  What happened to Dr. Donald Blake?  And yet, it turned out to be one of the most successful movies of all time.

The point is that Marvel is going to change things for the silver screen, even if it's things that hardcore, longtime fans (like me) hold sacred.  I'm just sitting here fingers crossed, and keeping faith in Marvel.

I've already gone back and forth for days with another poster who is perpetually stuck on the "old Pym" issue.  He is clearly disappointed, and that is his decision.  Based on what he's posted, I'm convinced he's not even going to see it.  I'm going.

And how do you know Janet Van Dyne is dead?

I'm just excited about the Ant-Man film, and I can't wait to see it.

Ginevra372

@Shefros@Ginevra372 Not a nerve at all. Just doing right by the comments. Although I guess posting here isn't going to do me any more good than if I were to post on a Facebook feed, which I know is pointless.

Sure, Marvel sold the rights to their characters for movies long ago because they weren't doing anything with them at the time. And, if the movies were done well, Marvel would only benefit/profit from their success. But, as was the fate of Affleck's Man Without Fear, it failed.

Shefros
Shefros

@Ginevra372 @Shefros ohh hit a nerve with that daredevil post huh? guess who sold sony the rights in the first place?

Ginevra372
Ginevra372

@Shefros@Ginevra372 If Whedon were to have that much influence on these movies as well, then maybe Tudyk could be his choice for a young Pym. I like noticing how Whedon always keeps his favorite actors to work with employed in his stuff, be it J. August Richards (Angel) getting a buffed up role on Agents of SHIELD or pretty much EVERY actor in his "Much Ado About Nothing" was someone that can be seen in any of his TV shows/movies.

Have to also keep in mind that every Marvel Studios movie has "star power" in it: an actor that has either a prestigious award or nomination on their resume. Douglas will be the 1 for Ant-Man, then.
