Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Cable Spotlight

Untitled Image

As if you needed another reason to pick up your controllers and jam on some "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2" again, a slew of new characters and sim missions are on their way to Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers. We'll have weekly spotlights on each new character with screenshots, video and quotes from the folks behind the games, and today the enigmatic mutant and soldier from the future, Cable, is our star!

Alex Kerr, Community Manager for Vicarious Visions, on Cable:

When I'm playing as Cable, the word that comes to my mind is "brutal." The power designers, animators and sound designers infused a feeling of deadly efficiency throughout all of his moves. From a visual standpoint, Cable has some of the most visually striking powers in the game (a favorite around the office is his fourth power, Particle Beam, which projects a searing, multi-layered laser into Cable's foes), but his body language is calculated, abrupt and professional—reflecting his training as a soldier.

His powers have dramatic effects: Cable can stun an entire crowd of foes, blast multiple opponents off their feet from a distance, scatter swarms of attackers, fill small enclosed spaces with deadly energy bolts and lay down huge amounts of damage whether he's fighting in close quarters or far away. He's kind of like a killer Boy Scout: no matter what the situation, Cable's prepared. His Fusions are particularly fun to pull off, and just as over-the-top as you'd expect from a guy with guns from the future: during his Fusion with Jean Grey, he unleashes a blast that's so destructive, it tears glowing, smoking holes into the ground.

Randy Ma, Intern, Marvel Games:

Cable in "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2"

Cable definitely falls under the rubric of a ranged character. Aside from a radial attack, most of Cable's special mutant attacks are grenades, beams and bullets, so players should definitely consider sitting back in battle and shooting off enemies from a distance. That is not to say Cable isn't suitable for brawling in MUA2—but there are few things more satisfying than shooting off a particle beam and destroying four enemies in a line. Also, be on the lookout for a fun little Achievement/Trophy with Cable's "best buddy." It's definitely a great Easter egg for comic fans.

Chris Scharling, Sound Designer for Vicarious Visions, on Cable:

I worked closely with Chris D'Ambrosio, another one of our sound designers, to make Cable sound like a walking cyborg tank. We were extremely fortunate to have the freedom to go crazy with our creativity and with that, we set out to make him badass.

Cable and Iron Man in "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2"
Chris did an awesome job of giving Cable's bionic arm a life of its own.  Cable has a really cool power where he jumps up in the air and slams his fist into the ground, creating a shockwave that knocks back enemies.  There's a nice low-end boom that comes out when he hits the ground, and it really gives you a sense of raw power each time you unleash it.  I'm also really proud of his flash grenades.  We wound up including a 5 kilohertz tone (which basically is the sound that you hear when your ears ring) to add that feeling of being dazed by the power of the grenades. The sound his laser makes when he does his fusion moves sounds really fierce, and you get an awesome sense of unleashing incredible amounts of destruction with it.  For me, it was the moment when we felt that we'd really nailed the feel of Cable being a walking tank.
