Our heroes have angered the gods.

Of course, said gods intend on destroying all life in existence, so maybe they deserve a little angering. And in INCREDIBLE HERCULES #139 on December 23, writers Fred Van Lente and Greg Pak along with artist Rodney Buchemi bring the "Assault on New Olympus" to a whole new level.

Hercules has managed to assemble the likes of Spider-Man, Wolverine and most of the Mighty Avengers in his bid against Hera and her fellow deities, meaning the heroes will encounter a new set of challenges in facing off against the gods themselves.

"Well, the obvious answer is that they're a lot more powerful, not to mention immortal," says Van Lente of the differences between going up against your average super villain and facing a god. "That's a daunting task for any fighter."

On the other hand, Van Lente notes that he sees very little that differentiates mortal heroes such as Spider-Man from the likes of Thor, God of Thunder.

"[There's almost no difference], to be honest with you," remarks Van Lente. "One of the ideas Greg and I have been working from the very beginning with Herc is that he is the most 'human' of gods. He started out life as a mortal, and as we've seen [he] doesn't do the whole

omnipotence and omniscience thing all that well. But smiting? Well, there Hercules excels. He'll be smiting lots of bad guys throughout the course of the 'Assault on New Olympus' storyline."

The goddess Athena has aided Hercules and his band of heroes, masterminding the Assault and helping to take Ares, God of War and ally to Hera, off the table, a move that seems obvious to Van Lente.

"Dude, have you seen Ares?" asks the writer. "He's the God of freaking War! Best to neutralize him, his berserker rage and plethora of oversized firearms as early and as often as possible. Unfortunately, Athena's done so at the expense of the Agents of Atlas, with ramifications we'll see in the back up story by Jeff Parker and Gabriel Hardman."

Given the odds they face, the heroes absolutely have a plan to save the lives of every living being, but as to the specifics of that plan, Van Lente remains mum.

"Well, I can't say too much without giving the story away," confides the writer. "Suffice it to say that the main goal is to shut down Hera's weapon Continuum (R), which threatens to destroy the entire universe-how and why, you'll find out in issue #139.

"Unfortunately, there are few complications, including the fact that Hera's husband, Zeus, whom she thought was dead, is running around New

Olympus in the body of a young boy. When and if she figures this out, that could open a whole new can of worms for our heroes."

Looking at the big picture of INCREDIBLE HERCULES, Athena has lurked in the background for some time now, mapping out her own master plan. And soon, readers will get to see just what she's worked towards from the beginning.

"You'll find out in #141," promises Van Lente. "After that, everything changes."
