"And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born-to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand!"
As the Heroic Age dawns on the Marvel Universe and we prepare for a new chapter in the ongoing saga of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, each Friday Marvel.com will present a different column focusing on the one and only Avengers. From line-ups to costumes to villains to classic stories and beyond, we've got you covered on the history of Marvel's most prolific team of heroes!
So let the call go out: Avengers Assemble!
Here at My Five Favorite Avengers, we ask the biggest and brightest in the comics industry who makes their best of list when it comes to Earth's Mightiest Heroes. For the first installment, we spoke with HAWKEYE & MOCKINGBIRD writer-and known Avengers super fan-Jim McCann, who came up with a very eclectic list...
"There was something about the absolute wide-eyed wonder of seeing someone who went from a student to a New Warrior fulfill her destiny and become an Avenger the way Angelica Jones did. It was potential made reality and something that should be praised and honored."
"Yes, he's an X-Man, and sometimes in space, but my favorite is when he is the blue and furry and bouncy Beast that is the heart of a team and the brains. Yes, Hank Pym can fulfill the role of a scientist rather well, but he comes with his own set of emotional baggage a lot of times, whereas Beast has dealt with his issues and just makes it look like fun to be an Avenger!"
"I never thought it would work, but by [writer Brian] Bendis, it has. The loner found a home. Peter Parker has a surrogate family when out of costume, but Spider-Man never had that sense of belonging until he joined the Avengers. Now, he is surrounded by heroes like him, and he has found a place where he can truly be his whole self. Some say it's a sales move, I say it's a great character move."
2. The Wasp
"Talk about how someone can grow-or shrink-before your very eyes. Of nearly every Avenger, I think the person who has shown the most growth from their first appearance until their last, [was] Ms. Janet Van Dyne. From the perceived weakest link to Chairwoman, Wasp was the first to prove that Avenging isn't just a man's world."
"Sure it could be seen as an easy choice, but I honestly believe he is a cornerstone of the Avengers. He's also the Avenger that people can aspire to be; no spider, serum or suit of armor needed, just skill and guts! You should read everything he's in!"
