"And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born-to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand!"

As the Heroic Age dawns on the Marvel Universe and we prepare for a new chapter in the ongoing saga of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, each Friday Marvel.com will present a different column focusing on the one and only Avengers. From line-ups to costumes to villains to classic stories and beyond, we've got you covered on the history of Marvel's most prolific team of heroes!

So let the call go out: Avengers Assemble!

It's that time again, Avengers fans; time to probe the greatest minds in comics and ask them that question of utmost importance: who are your top five favorite Avengers?

This month the writer of CAPTAIN AMERICA: PATRIOT and the Marvel.com-exclusive 1940's Captain America newspaper strip Karl Kesel offers his list along with some insight.

5. The Two-Gun Kid
"Not sure if he was a full member, and it's true, I love westerns and western characters, but to me Two-Gun represents the wild card, the unexpected twist that always keeps the Avengers interesting and
unpredictable."

4. Hawkeye
"It's great to know that someone can be a jerk, but if they have extraordinary talent and drive, they can also be an Avenger. Hawkeye represents the fire and spirit of the team."

3. Captain America (Steve Rogers)
"Earth's Mightiest Heroes should be led by Earth's greatest hero. Who else [do] you want calling the shots when the going gets rough and everything hits the fan? Something that happens all the time with the A-team, you may have noticed. He's the heart of the team."

1-2. Hank Pym & The Wasp (Janet Van Dyne)
"I've always had a deep fondness for this pair, partly because of their founding member status, partly because of their very basic, very cool, and very complimentary powers. Smart, sexy, droll, sassy, they're Marvel's second greatest couple after Reed and Sue. To me, they embody the soul of the team.

Nice choices! If only Two-Gun kid becomes a Secret Avenger or part of the Avengers Academy would be cool!
