Hero Up!

On a breezy Tuesday afternoon in San Francisco, game developers Gazillion and the Amazing Society pulled back the curtain and unveiled “Super Hero Squad Online” to the public for the first time.

With a stunning CG trailer landing just days prior to the event, there’d been much buzz and heightened expectations for “SHSO.” Luckily, the game—a massively multiplayer online title aimed at kids but full of fun and surprises for gamers of all ages—looks and plays like a dream, and the gathered journalists and insiders were bowled over.

What exactly got everyone so excited? How about dozens of playable Marvel heroes, with a full array of over 5,000 Marvel characters on hand for the future? Maybe the “gotta have ‘em all” aspect of collecting more heroes? It could have been the dedication to characterization and humor that’s mirrored in the “Super Hero Squad Show!” animated series? Of course it may be the incredibly interactive combination of the online social space and combat zones. Actually, it’s all that and more.

In “Super Hero Squad Online,” you’ll amass a collection of Marvel heroes from Spider-Man to Wolverine to War Machine to many more. You’ll always be the hero, never the sidekick. In social spaces—where you hang out, meet your friends and find stuff to do—you’ll be able to take any of your characters and use them to explore, discover and interact. Taking your characters into missions, you’ll form a squad with other players and embark on short, but satisfying missions. Take on Skrulls, foil Doctor Octopus’ plans for domination and kick some ninja butt—you’ll be able to jump in and complete missions in about 15 minutes!

So “Super Hero Squad Online” has tons of fun, fast and easy pick-up-and-play gameplay; an immense assortment of Marvel characters with their own distinct personalities, powers and abilities; a robust game world; and numerous surprises we haven’t even shown yet. A game this spectacular, this amazing surely requires a super-powered console or high-end gaming computer to play, right? Heck no! “Super Hero Squad Online” is playable directly in your browser, on just about any computer. Mac, PC, Linux—as long as you can get online and browse around, you can Hero Up with your friends and jump into “SHSO.”

We’ll have much more on the game in the coming months as we get to the 2011 release of “Super Hero Squad Online.” For now, enjoy all the in-game screenshots and watch the brand new, director’s cut version of the “Super Hero Squad Online” trailer!

I'm totally up for getting this game - I love that it has all the characters in their original costume such as Luke Cage AKA Powerman and the Falcon, etc. The Silver Age of Comics rules! Bring it on!
