While the animated Avengers have yet to form, Iron Man has a long history with the team in the comics, so come with us now as we look back at his tenure throughout the years!

Earth's Mightiest Histories: Iron Man

One of the founding Avengers, Iron Man has long served amongst Earth's Mightiest Heroes in many of their incarnations. While his first stint with the team would only last from AVENGERS Vol. 1 #1-16, in those issues he and the Avengers first faced many of their greatest threats, including Kang and the Masters of Evil.

Iron Man served as the team's first leader, and together with Captain America and Thor to this day remains one of the central pillars of the group and what it stands for. The Armored Avenger would frequently serve under different leaderships, also joining Hawkeye's West Coast Avengers.

After the West Coast Avengers disbanded, Iron Man helped form Force Works, a more proactive team that would take the fight to the villains. When the group eventually disbanded, Iron Man returned to the Avengers and served almost continuously with the group from AVENGERS Vol. 3 #1 until he found himself on the run from Norman Osborn following the events of Secret Invasion.

Today, Iron Man joins Thor and the new Captain America, Bucky, as well as Steve Rogers on the lineup of Brian Bendis and John Romita, Jr.'s ongoing AVENGERS series, with issue #5 hitting shelves today, September 22!
