Iron Man: The Death of Tony Stark

By Ben Morse

All this week on Marvel.com, we’re getting set for INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #500, coming your way January 19, by listing just five from the multitude of reasons to pick up this gigantic anniversary special.

Yesterday we previewed the return of the malevolent Mandarin, and today on the agenda we’ve got…

…the death of Tony Stark? Huh? Wait a minute, that can’t be right.

Let’s got to INVINCIBLE IRON MAN Editor Alejandro Arbona to try and make sense of this:

“What’s happening on this cryptic page? Here’s what the script says...”

PAGE FORTY-EIGHT

48.1
TONY looks back at the hologram machine as it goes dead. ALL ELECTRICITY goes dead. The room suddenly dim, everything outside is dark. He’s lit only by moonlight and the fading glow of the hologram generator.

NO DIALOGUE

48.2
ON TONY. Who can’t help but smile.

TONY               Uh-oh.

48.3
ON THE REPUSLOR DISC in his chest, sparking one last time, flaring up–

NO DIALOGUE

48.4
FIXED: the RD goes dark.

NO DIALOGUE

48.5
PULL BACK as TONY slumps down to his knees.

NO DIALOGUE

48.6
TONY falls back like a samurai with a slit belly. Resting back on his haunches, sitting on his heels in the dark.

TONY (weak)     thuh--

TONY (weak)     that’s…that’s it?

48.7
PUSH IN. Tony Stark dies.

NO DIALOGUE

the chances of them killing ironman off, especially now considering how good fraction is doing, are very slim

Considering he's pulling in endless fans through the theaters, I doubt they're gonna kill him off for real. This is just some insight to a changable future, or a bad dream. It would be universally stupid to kill off a character that may bring new comic fans.

my guess, it's a look at the future, based on yesterday's panels, tony looked like an old man.
