This past weekend at WWE’s annual pay-per-view mega-show, WrestleMania, masked Superstar Rey Mysterio looked to be auditioning for the Avengers in a costume heavily inspired by Marvel’s star-spangled hero, Captain America.
The wildly popular West Coast Poppin’ competitor exploded onto the grandest stage of them all to clash with his rival, Cody Rhodes, in a collision not unlike one that would be seen on the four-color pages of a Marvel comic.

Mysterio has a track record for making superheroic splashes on sports entertainment’s biggest nights, including his WrestleMania debut in 2003 in which he competed while outfitted in a dark crimson homage to Daredevil. With the release of “Captain America: The First Avenger” this summer, the Superstar opted to go with a powerfully patriotic look for WrestleMania XXVII.
“Red, white and blue represent our country, they’re colors of our flag, and of course, I’m a big comic fanatic,” Mysterio explained, lingering in the locker room area of Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. “With Captain America having the wings on the side [of his mask] and me having the birds on mine, there’s a connection there between that action hero and me.”
In the past, Rey-Rey has expressed his inner fan with threads mimicking Iron Man, Spider-Man and The Silver Surfer, typically coordinating with major Marvel movie releases. The two-time World Champion’s enthusiasm will continue this July when Chris Evans bears the shield of Captain America.
“Of course, I’ve got to go check [The First Avenger] out!” he proclaimed. “I saw the trailer and I’d really like to see how Chris Evans is going to play the role. Physique-wise, it looks like he really worked hard to get in shape for the part [of Steve Rogers]. I’ve been looking forward to it.”
But Cap won’t the only Marvel icon coming to the big screen this year. Just next month, “Thor” premieres in theaters on May 6, then in June, Marvel’s mutants evolve in “X-Men: First Class.” This makes Mysterio’s options plentiful for ring gear in future confrontations.
“I do have several outfits that are still in the process or sitting in my closet ready to wear,” Rey alluded. “I had to make a decision and I picked [Cap] for this night. You never know—maybe you might see something at WWE’s summer blockbuster, SummerSlam.”
