A chapter in mutant history closed this week with UNCANNY X-MEN #544, the final issues of the series that began back in 1963 and introduced the world to the Children of the Atom. While Regenesis will bring with it a new UNCANNY X-MEN #1 on November 2, an era has ended, and now we look back on just a few classic moments from the past four decades-plus.

It all begins here! It’s young Jean Grey’s first day at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, but it quickly becomes clear this mansion in Westchester houses more than just students looking to further their education.
