A Week of Hope: Unlimited Highlights

By Ben Chabala

Every week we'll pick a handful of awesome comics from the thousands available through Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. From creator spotlights to editor's picks and more, this'll be your spot to find something new and cool.

This week we’re prepping you for Avengers Vs. X-Men and spotlighting the mutant messiah, Hope Summers! Witness her bloody beginnings, watch her grow up on the run through time with Cable, and be there when she manages to ignite the latent mutant gene in five very special teens. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

X-MEN #205

Despite the freezing temperature, Cooperstown, Alaska burns as if someone soaked it in gasoline. Reavers, Purifiers, Mister Sinister’s Marauders, and the X-Men have turned the quiet town into a charnel house fighting over the first mutant child born since M-Day.  The X-Men want to keep her alive as she might be the key to saving the entire mutant race. That’s why the Reavers and Purifiers want her dead.  As for Sinister…do we really ever know what he’s up to?  Blood soaks the snow as the battle blazes to a fever pitch, with the life of a child and the future of mutantkind hanging in the balance!

CABLE #11 (2008)

Forced to flee into the far-flung future, Cable and the mutant messiah, Hope, find themselves in a world devastated by war. No food grows and poisoned water falls from the sky; not exactly the kind of place you want to raise a 7-year-old. But the unlikely duo survives and Cable begins to tell Hope about her past, the X-Men, and her heritage.  Suddenly the future doesn’t seem so bleak. Will they somehow make it through this harsh tomorrow?

CABLE #21 (2008)

Cable and Hope return to Earth from the depths of space, and after a brutal crash landing they once again find themselves with a familiar antagonist dogging their every step:  Bishop. Hope thinks she’s ready, finally ready to go back to the past; they just need to hijack Bishop’s time machine, something that the former hero probably won’t give up without a fight. But Hope’s ready for it. She wants to go home.

X-MEN: SECOND COMING #1

Finally back in the present, Cable and Hope couldn’t have picked a worse time if they tried, as it turns out that Cyclops and the X-Men weren’t the only people waiting for the mutant messiah to return. Scott believes Hope represents the survival of those with the X-Gene and he’s not giving her up without a fight. He scrambles all his available fighters to protect her while Bastion marshals his army to wipe her and the mutant race from the face of the history.

GENERATION HOPE #1

Hope’s return to the past triggered the rebirth of mutantkind. Cerebra picked up five lights, new mutant signatures, after she jaunted in from the future. Now after saving four of these teens from their own powers, Hope and her new gang, with Rogue acting as chaperone, head to Japan to find the fifth light. Unfortunately this might be a bit more than they can handle, especially if Cyclops and Wolverine can’t stop him from rampaging through Tokyo. Will this fifth light darken the rest? Can Hope save the world one more time?
