Five Favorite Avengers: Ryan Stegman

By TJ Dietsch

And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born—to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand!”

Each Friday Marvel.com will present a different column focusing on the one and only Avengers. From line-ups to costumes to villains to classic stories and beyond, we’ve got you covered on the history of Marvel’s most prolific team of heroes!

So let the call go out: Avengers Assemble!

As the recently announced incoming artist on FANTASTIC FOUR starting with August's issue #609, Ryan Stegman's got some incredibly iconic characters to draw in his immediate future. However, as a fan of Marvel Comics, he also loves the assemblage of heroes known the Avengers.

When asked to list his own personal favorite Avengers team members, Stegman came at it from an artistic standpoint as well as a fan's one. Throughout his seven years in the business, Stegman has tackled a number of different books from MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN to SCARLET SPIDER, so he knows how some of the more prominent characters work from both perspectives.

His list includes an original team member, two of the most well-known characters around and one whose place on the list seems connected solely to their big screen portrayer.

The Hulk

“One of my favorite characters to draw. I also enjoy him as a character, obviously. But if I were ever to draw AVENGERS I'd want The Hulk on the team just because I'd want to draw him.”

Captain America

Because he’s Captain America.

Quicksilver

“Again, I chose this one because of what I like to draw. And speedsters are super fun. I haven't had the chance to draw many speedsters yet, but I think it would fit my style pretty well. So this would be cool.”

Wolverine

“Wolverine is always cool on any team. Gives them an edge. He's a loose cannon so it always elevates the intensity.”

Black Widow

“Any character that can be portrayed by Scarlett Johansson in skin-tight pleather is good by me.”
