It's the story everyone's talking about: there's a new Spider-Man in town.
Sure, he looks like the old one, but he's packing a new superior attitude. Doctor Octopus has swapped minds with Peter Parker, stolen his identity and left him for dead. In the pages of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN and AVENGING SPIDER-MAN, the story of Otto Octavius and Peter Parker continues to unfold.
This week we'll explore how the Superior Spider-Man will interact with the world of his old foe, starting with his relationship with Peter himself.
At the end of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1 we learned that Peter Parker hasn’t gone away entirely; there's a trace of Peter left behind, and it's capable of exerting control over Otto. We spoke to Spider-Man Senior Editor Steve Wacker to learn more.
Marvel.com: What did we see at the end of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1? Is it a ghost? A memory? A Jiminy Cricket?
Steve Wacker: That’s part of the ongoing story, but there is definitely more going on than meets the eye.
Marvel.com: How much influence does Peter have? Is he influencing Otto’s thoughts, or just his actions?
Steve Wacker: He seems to be able to influence [Otto] ever so slightly as we’ve seen in AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #15.1 when he stopped the burglar.
Marvel.com: But Doc Ock's a smart guy. Isn't he going to work out that some part of Peter is still in there?
Steve Wacker: I hope not!
Marvel.com: Ock’s already flirting with Peter's ex, Mary Jane. His own ex, May Parker, is now his aunt, and married to someone else. What can you tell us about these relationships?
Steve Wacker: Those are all relationships most important to Peter Parker. Having to watch Ock screw them up is going to drive Pete crazy that’s for sure.
Marvel.com: Will we see Otto interacting with any of Peter's other exes and old friends?
Steve Wacker: Absolutely. But we’ll also be introducing a lot of new cast members over the next few months. It’s a new Spidey, so we can’t keep relying on the same old 50-year-old cast of characters.
Marvel.com: What about Kaine, aka Scarlet Spider? Doesn't Otto have some unfinished business with him?
Steve Wacker: Ock has a lot of hate for Kaine considering their past. That will surface over in [Chris] Yost’s terrific SCARLET SPIDER book in the coming months.
Marvel.com: It seems like Max Modell's lab should suit Otto pretty well. Will he find himself at home at Peter's workplace?
Steve Wacker: Yep. We saw that in the very first issue. Horizon is going to feel like giant toy box to Ock.
Marvel.com: And how is Otto with a camera?
Steve Wacker: Like a fish with a Rubik’s Cube.
Tomorrow, find out how Spider-Man former arch foe relates to his remaining enemies, and be sure to pick up SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #2!
