Transported from terra firma to the inky depths of space, the X-Men suddenly find themselves face-to-face with the mad Shi’ar Emperor D’Ken and his Imperial Guard. What happens next can only be described as an interstellar slugfest of the highest order, as mutant battles guardsmen for the very fate of the universe! But Gladiator and his troops have Xavier’s students outnumbered and out-powered, and unless backup arrives, D’Ken may actually attempt to harvest the unfathomable energies of the M’Krann crystal, putting every being in all the galaxies at risk for imminent extinction!

The Dark Phoenix, a cosmic entity of death and destruction, lays dormant within the frail form of Jean Grey. However if unleashed it would rake its flaming talons across entire galaxies, consuming stars and burning once fertile planets into nothing but charred husks. Lilandra, Empress of the Shi’ar, will not allow such a thing to happen ever again and calls for Jean’s death, as do an entire council of intergalactic dignitaries. But the X-Men won’t give her up without a fight and so once again the merry mutants find themselves pitted against the Imperial Guard. If they lose, Phoenix’s life will be forfeit!

Horrifyingly vivid dreams haunt Rick Jones’ slumber. Deep in sleep he travels across galaxies to Hala, the Kree homeworld, and finds its billions of inhabitants bereft of life.
