The SUB-MARINER: THE DEPTHS writer throws back to his X-STATIX classics

Every week, we'll tap one creator to browse Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited and pick some of their favorite work from the expansive catalog. This week: SUB-MARINER: THE DEPTHS writer Peter Milligan:
"Part of me chooses [X-STATIX #6-8] to be bloody-minded, as Axel Alonso, the editor, once told me he thought this story didn't quite hang together as well as some of the other X-STATIX and X-FORCE stories. Well, [censored] you, Alonso. There are some great ideas in here to do with Venus and her sexuality, and, perhaps most importantly, the story gives [artist] Mike Allred the freedom to really let rip. The shots with Venus in her new suit and the teleporting scenes show what an exceptionally gifted artist Mike is.
"I love Edie Sawyer. She's complex and funny and sexy and [X-STATIX #10] goes into more depth with her, in a different kind of X-Statix story. I always presumed that Mike Allred had put his magnificent stamp on her so firmly that every other artist's version would be a big disappointment. But here, Philip Bond manages to make Edie his own, while still giving us a recognizable and lovable Edie Sawyer. I fell in love all over again."
