THIS WEEK, JIM MCCANN REVIEWS THE SIN CITY* UNRATED, SPECIAL EDTION DVD
The newly released Sin City (Recut, Extended, Unrated) Edition is, quite simply, how you release a "Special Edition" DVD.
Filled with extras, this edition includes new features that are as groundbreaking as the film itself.
More than just a collection of film-footage, this edition teaches viewers exactly how co-director Robert Rodriguez achieved such a unique look for this film.
More importantly, it puts the power in the viewer's hand to continue using the techniques employed in the making of Sin City.
Be it the "15-minute Flick School," the "Long Take" examining guest director Quentin Tarantino's segment, or the high-speed "Green" version of the film showing the entire movie without any special effects, fans and budding film-makers will gain insight, knowledge, and a deeper respect for how this film was put together as well guidance in how to do it themselves.
The DVD's revolutionary experience doesn't stop there, either!
To further give credence to the source material - Frank Miller's 4 Sin City graphic novels - this special edition features a viewing option that allows the audience to watch the film in four, individual stories - all of which have been extended - rather than one intercut story.
There are other, insightful featurettes and commentaries included, but the most unusual - and interesting - feature is the audio track featuring a recording of the audience reaction at the Austin, Texas premiere, which gives the home viewer the feeling of a true, theater-going experience.
All said, this is the edition of any DVD to have in any collection.
