Every week, we'll tap one creator to browse Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited and pick some of their favorite work from the expansive catalog. This week: former GENERATION X and NEW WARRIORS writer Jay Faerber!
"When [editor] Mark Paniccia approached me about writing a Captain Universe project, he already had a rough outline of what he wanted to see. In a nutshell, he wanted five different heroes to be granted the Captain Universe powers. Those heroes were the Hulk, Daredevil, X-23, the Invisible Woman, and the Silver Surfer. With those marching orders, I was pretty much turned loose.
"The blueprint Mark laid out provided a great opportunity to play all across the Marvel Universe. I got to play with classic characters like Hulk, Daredevil, Silver Surfer, and the Invisible Woman, while also writing rising stars like X-23 and the new Scorpion. Plus I was able to work in a particular old favorite: Gladiator. Gladiator leads me to probably my favorite bit in an assignment with quite a few favorite bits, namely, the Invisible Woman issue.
"One of my favorite old Fantastic Four comics was issue #249 by John Byrne, where Gladiator takes on and defeats the Fantastic Four.
"So as I plotted out the Invisible Woman issue of the CAPTAIN UNIVERSE series, I got the idea to bring Gladiator back for a rematch...but this time, the Invisible Woman would have the Captain Universe powers, and the battle would have quite a different outcome. And that double-page spread of the Invisible Woman using her force-field to protect a city from a tidal wave? Pure gold."
